Prague Christmas Market Schedule: Your Top Pick for a December Eastern Europe Trip

When I visited Prague,
Old Town Square, with the Týn Church in the background,
was like a picture postcard no matter where I took a photo – simply stunning.
In Prague, the main Christmas markets are at
Old Town Square and
Wenceslas Square.
This year, they're set to begin on November 28th
and continue until January 6th, 2027!
Imagine, you can still soak in the market atmosphere even after Christmas and into the New Year!
How exciting is that?!
Last year, the Christmas tree lighting ceremony took place on the opening night.
If your travel dates align, try to catch the first day!
December 24th will have shortened operating hours.
Last year, only the food stalls remained open after 2 PM.
This year's exact hours haven't been announced yet, so
check the official Prague Tourism website for updates.

Vienna Christmas Markets: What's New with Belvedere and the Ice Rink This Year

Vienna, Austria, holds a special place in my heart among all my Eastern European travels.
With markets popping up in every square,
I really enjoyed the fun of exploring two or three different ones in a single day.
The largest one is the City Hall Square market, which
runs from November 13th to December 26th.
Right next to it, the ice rink stays open until January 6th.
Even after the main markets close, you can still enjoy the ice rinks around New Year's in Eastern Europe,
meaning you can skate right in front of the City Hall!
And there are some exciting changes this year!
The Belvedere Palace market has been rebranded as
‘K&K Christmas Market’ and has moved its location.
Instead of being directly in front of the palace,
it's now on the opposite side of the lake.
Also, the Maria Theresien Platz market, which was closed last year,
is reportedly making a comeback this year!
If you want to experience Eastern European Christmas markets into January,
then head to Schönbrunn Palace, which runs until January 6th!
Refer to the Vienna Tourist Board website

Budapest Christmas Market, Europe's #1 Basilica in 2026

Hungary's Budapest is pure love, too.
The square in front of St. Stephen's Basilica
was much more beautiful after sunset.
If you've ever looked up rankings for Eastern European Christmas markets,
this name will probably sound familiar.
The Advent Bazilika Market in front of the Basilica
was chosen by European Best Destinations (EBD) as
the #1 Best Christmas Market in Europe for 2026.
Its significance is even greater because it's in the All-Star category,
where past award-winning markets compete.
Every day from 5:30 PM, a light show illuminates the facade of the Basilica
every 30 minutes.
The Basilica Market runs
until January 1, 2027,
while the Vörösmarty Square Market
is open until December 31st.
However, last year, the Vörösmarty Market's
handicraft stalls started packing up on December 28th,
so if you're visiting towards the very end of the year, I recommend the Basilica market!

December Eastern Europe Christmas Market Travel Tips: Itineraries Around the 24th + Germany

Are you planning a slightly ambitious Eastern European trip?
If you're combining Eastern Europe with Germany,
December 24th will be your key date, right?
German Christmas markets
have their last day on December 24th,
with Dresden and Munich closing by 2 PM,
and they don't operate at all on the 25th.
I recommend visiting Germany before the 24th,
and then after Christmas,
moving on to Prague, Vienna, and Budapest.
.
Also, Munich takes a day off from Christmas events on November 22nd,
so be sure to plan a different German itinerary for that day!
German Markets | 2026 Dates | Dec 24th |
Dresden Striezelmarkt | Nov 25 – Dec 24 | Closes 2 PM |
Munich Marienplatz | Nov 20 – Dec 24 (Closed Nov 22) | Closes 2 PM |
Nuremberg | Nov 27 – Dec 24 | Last day |
📍 Dresden
Dresden, Germany

When preparing for your Eastern European trip,
there are also things to pack for on-site visits.
Most Eastern European Christmas markets
do accept card payments,
but smaller handicraft stalls might only take cash.
Be sure to include small amounts of Euros, Korunas, and Forints
in your packing list.
Also,
here's a Christmas souvenir tip!
When you order mulled wine (vin chaud), depending on the market,
you might need to pay a mug deposit.
You get it back if you return the mug,
but if you don't, it becomes a souvenir.
Each Eastern European Christmas market
has unique mug designs,
so it's fun to collect them!
The December cold in Eastern Europe can feel much more intense
when you're standing outside for a long time, so
definitely bring gloves and hand warmers.
Even just covering your face makes a big difference,
so a balaclava and scarf are absolute must-haves!
I'll cover the December Eastern Europe weather and what to wear
in a separate post next time.
