There’s one particular memory that stands out as an absolute highlight, a moment I’ve cherished and am finally ready to share: my walk along the iconic City Walls of Dubrovnik.

When you think of a Croatian getaway, two images often spring to mind. First, the majestic City Walls of Dubrovnik, famously recognized from the hit series Game of Thrones. And second, the breathtaking, emerald-hued waters of Plitvice Lakes National Park.

Have you heard about the recent news regarding a new regulation in Dubrovnik? Due to the noise caused by travelers dragging suitcases through the Old Town, there's been talk of fines for those rolling luggage within the city walls. While you'll likely be traveling light for the wall walk, it's a good reminder to respect local customs and rules—when in Rome, do as the Romans do!

The entrance fee back in October 2022 was 250 Kuna, which converted to about ~$30 USD at the time. I remember thinking it was quite steep, comparable to the cost of visiting Angkor Wat, which I'd always considered one of the priciest attractions. But trust me, the views are worth every penny!

There isn't just one entry point to the City Walls; you'll find several access points around the Old Town. Once you're up there, a leisurely stroll around the entire perimeter takes approximately an hour. And don't worry about where to descend—you can exit from various points along the way.

A short climb up some narrow stairs quickly brings you to the top of the walls. There are countless picturesque spots hidden along the route, perfect for capturing those postcard-worthy shots. I simply followed my guide, who knew all the best angles!

The morning of my tour started with rain, making the sky overcast for most of our walk. Thankfully, the rain stopped just as we were finishing up, allowing us to continue exploring without an umbrella.

This particular spot offered a fantastic photo opportunity, even if my legs were a bit wobbly from all the climbing!

Beyond Dubrovnik's ancient walls, you'll spot another iconic landmark: Mount Srdj. It's truly another magnificent viewpoint, offering panoramic vistas of the city.

Why do people love climbing mountains so much?

I've heard locals and other travelers sometimes playfully wonder why so many visitors are drawn to conquering mountains. It seems there's a universal fascination with reaching new heights and enjoying the incredible views!

Everywhere you look, Dubrovnik's distinctive orange rooftops fill the horizon, framed by the sparkling Adriatic Sea and the surrounding mountains.

Dubrovnik skyrocketed into a global hotspot after capturing the world's attention as a filming location for Game of Thrones.

However, this explosion of interest hasn't been without its downsides for the local residents. The cost of living surged dramatically, and real estate prices skyrocketed, leading to many long-time residents losing their homes.

Hotels and businesses quickly filled the void, a classic example of gentrification. It seems that when any tourist destination experiences a sudden boom, such challenges are almost inevitable.

As travelers, it’s easy to simply enjoy the sights, spend some money, and move on. But as I've grown older and traveled more, I find myself looking beyond the surface, becoming more aware of these underlying issues and the invisible impacts of tourism.

But I digress!

You don't necessarily *need* a guided tour; if your itinerary allows, a tour can be fun. But if time is tight, simply walking the walls on your own will still allow you to fully immerse yourself in the beauty of Dubrovnik.
