Hello, fellow food adventurers!
This is Minimanimu, bringing you another hand-picked restaurant recommendation.
As of September 2026, the summer heat is definitely here, with daytime temperatures soaring above 86°F. When the weather gets this warm, it's easy to feel drained and tired, which means it's the perfect time to recharge with some hearty grilled meat!
Recently, I followed a recommendation from my foodie friend to Sinchon and discovered a Korean BBQ spot that completely redefined my expectations for pork belly (*o-gyeop-sal*) and pork neck (*mok-sal*). Tucked away in a Sinchon alley, it's Donbul 1971, a specialty restaurant for fresh Jeju charcoal-grilled pork.
They pre-grill thick cuts of Jeju pork over charcoal, then the staff finishes cooking it right at your table. This means you can just relax and enjoy the meal without worrying about burning anything! Here’s my honest, self-funded review of this fantastic Sinchon grilled pork spot.

How long is the wait at Donbul 1971?
Are reservations possible?
This Sinchon restaurant is incredibly popular among students from Yonsei and Sogang Universities, as well as local office workers, so there's usually a wait during peak hours.
For regular reservations, you can easily call them directly. If you're planning a corporate dinner or a large gathering, it's best to make a reservation at least a day in advance.
We visited around 8:00 PM on a weekday, avoiding the busiest dinner rush, and were seated immediately without any wait.
Exterior / Interior
As you walk down the alley between Sinchon Station and Hongik University Station, you'll find Donbul 1971, which greets you with its charming, old-school exterior.

Step inside, and you'll find a spacious and comfortable setting with both round and rectangular tables.

The walls are covered with countless scribbles from past visitors, giving it a nostalgic, old-school vibe. Plus, seeing autographs from famous celebrities confirms that this place is a true local favorite!

Menu & My Order
Donbul 1971 in Sinchon prides itself on using only Jeju and other high-quality domestic pork, ensuring exceptional meat quality.
A major advantage here is that the meat is pre-grilled over charcoal to infuse it with a smoky aroma, allowing you to quickly enjoy the juicy meat at your table without losing any of its precious juices.

My Order:
·Jeju Pork Belly (*O-gyeop-sal*) ~$11 * 2
·Jeju Pork Neck (*Mok-sal*) ~$11 * 1
·Tesla Somaek Set ~$9
·Soju/Beer ~$4
My Experience
Once we placed our order, a generous and neatly arranged selection of side dishes was set on our table.

The basic sides included fresh lettuce wraps, seasoned scallions (*pajeori*), preserved mustard greens (*gatkimchi*), pickled chili peppers, white kimchi, and fresh wasabi. What truly stood out were the unique additions: capelin roe (*cheong-eo-al*), which is rare to find at a Korean BBQ spot, and a subtly bitter yet refreshing kale pickle (*kaeil jangajji*).

And then there's the kimchi bean sprout soup, served bubbling hot in an aluminum pot! Its tangy, spicy, and incredibly refreshing broth instantly whets your appetite. This soup alone is enough to enjoy a bottle of soju!

The complimentary steamed egg casserole (*gyeran-jjim*), served fluffy and warm in an earthenware pot, was perfect for coating our stomachs before the feast.

Each table has a burner with a splash guard to prevent oil splatters, and a small pot of *meljeot* (fermented anchovy sauce), a classic pairing for Jeju pork, is placed on the grill.

When the pre-grilled pork belly, with its juices locked in by the charcoal sear, arrives, a staff member expertly grills it to a perfect golden brown right at your table.

Thick cuts of meat can be tricky to cook perfectly, often ending up burnt or dry. But with the expert touch of the staff, grilling to perfection is effortless and enjoyable.

Once cooked, the pork belly pieces are neatly moved to the edge of the grill to keep them warm without overcooking, so all you have to do is pick and enjoy!

Try a bite: place a slice of refreshing white kimchi on a fresh lettuce leaf, top it with some seasoned scallions, and add a piece of pork belly dipped in the special soy sauce. As you chew, the juices burst in your mouth, and the meat simply melts!

There's so much fun in creating different combinations with the various side dishes! And if you run out of anything, the staff is quick to refill, which is another huge plus.

The pork neck (*mok-sal*) also comes pre-grilled with a delicious charcoal aroma. While this cut can sometimes be dry, here, the juices are perfectly sealed within the meat, offering a chewy yet incredibly moist texture with every bite. Absolutely amazing!
