It was already my fourth day in Chiang Mai, and it was high time for a massage! Honestly, I should have gotten one sooner, but between the Loy Krathong festivities and various day tours, things had been a whirlwind. Finally, the moment arrived.
While I had a generous itinerary planned, most of the tours were full-day affairs, leaving less free time than I'd anticipated. Today, I had another tour, but thankfully, it was a night excursion!
I initially thought about heading to the popular Day-Day in Nimmanhaemin, but since I couldn't get an immediate appointment, I decided to try a local shop that caught my eye. The signage was prominent, and the name, 'The Signature SPA', just felt right, so I went for it!
Both the exterior and interior decor were clean and well-maintained.
Browsing the menu, I noticed they had quite a few 3-hour courses. I considered a 2-hour session combining Thai and oil massage, but ultimately, I opted for a straightforward 90-minute Thai massage.
They had a selection of oils to choose from, laid out nicely.
After a quick questionnaire, I was offered a glass of water. Usually, I'm offered tea, so getting water was a first for me! Haha.
As I was filling out the form, a masseuse opened the door and walked in. That's when I started to feel a little uneasy.
It could only be one of two scenarios: either she was a freelancer called in urgently, or she was just starting her shift. Given the time of day, the latter seemed unlikely, making the former a strong possibility.
My suspicions were confirmed during the foot bath. She seemed unsure how to handle the water afterward, appearing to ask another staff member in Thai what to do. I couldn't understand the language, but the context made it clear.
Well, what could I do? I went in for the massage. The treatment rooms were separated by curtains, and she started with mine half-open. It seemed she was observing how the staff masseuse was treating my companion, perhaps to pick up on the house style.
The quality was just so-so. It wasn't bad, but it wasn't particularly great either. It's hard to give a definitive rating, though, since she wasn't a regular staff member. The main takeaway is that this Chiang Mai massage shop uses freelancers to supplement its team.
Perhaps I should have made a reservation and gone to a more established place, like Chiang Mai Faranah Spa & Massage.
While I've never personally run a spa in Chiang Mai, it's clear that not just this place, but many others, rely on freelancers, especially during peak season. The number of clients a spa can serve is limited by its permanent staff. The challenge is that during high season, customer numbers explode, while in low season, they plummet.
To manage this, spas typically maintain a mid-range number of regular employees. However, this means they miss out on potential earnings during the lucrative peak season. That's where calling in freelancers becomes essential. This strategy is more feasible in a city like Chiang Mai. In more popular tourist destinations, large travel agencies often offer higher pay to monopolize these freelancers during peak times, leaving smaller shops without the extra help when they need it most.
Since I didn't get a massage from one of the regular staff, it's tricky to give a full review. Still, it was a slightly disappointing start to my Chiang Mai massage experiences. (Though I didn't check before, this place actually has fairly high Google ratings – a shame I couldn't experience that level of service).
Ultimately, if you're looking for a top-notch experience, it's always best to book in advance. Look for places with plenty of positive reviews and high ratings, like Chiang Mai One Nimman Let's Relax Spa.
