Chiang Mai Loy Krathong Festival
Alongside Songkran, Loy Krathong stands as one of Thailand's most iconic and beloved festivals. To truly experience its magic, there's no better place than Chiang Mai. You'll quickly understand why as you read on, and we'll guide you to where the most spectacular displays unfold.
This breathtaking spectacle is created by thousands of sky lanterns released simultaneously, so you'll want to be right where the crowds gather to witness it firsthand.

Honestly, words don't do this festival justice. One picture truly speaks a thousand words.
It's one of those awe-inspiring sights you simply *must* see at least once in your lifetime. When you're there, watching it unfold, you'll be utterly captivated, speechless with wonder.

It's famously known as the real-life inspiration for the lantern scene in Disney's *Tangled*. It's truly a live-action fairy tale! (Seriously, I'm writing this post while listening to 'And at last I see the light' – it's just that magical!)
If you listen closely to some videos, you might even hear Japanese tourists exclaiming about Rapunzel – the magic is universally felt!
2026 Loy Krathong in Chiang Mai: November Festival

Typically, the main Yi Peng lantern release events span two days. For 2026, the Chiang Mai festival information indicates these dates will be November 24th and 25th. Here’s a quick rundown of how the organized events usually unfold:
First, attendees gather at a designated meeting point (last year it was Maya Mall) and are transported to the event venue via songthaew (a local open-air truck). If you splurge for VIP tickets, you might even get a fancy limousine bus!

Upon arrival, after confirming the meeting point and grabbing a coffee or browsing Maya Mall, I thought I had plenty of time...

But then...

Oh.

My.

GOD...
I should have lined up immediately! I had no idea so many people would be going. I traded a relaxing coffee for an incredibly long wait, but eventually, I boarded a vehicle and made it to the event site.

Even though it was a songthaew, the ride was manageable, and the scenery was pretty nice. But by that point, I was completely exhausted from the wait! Haha.

Somehow, we finally arrived! After showing our voucher, we received our ticket (or admission pass?) and even a complimentary eco-bag. My seat was in the Standard section, BT 5.

Passing through the grand entrance, you'll find yourself in a vibrant atmosphere.

There's a food court where you can grab whatever catches your eye. Just note that the Standard and VIP sections have separate dining areas.

VIP guests get to enjoy their meal leisurely at proper tables,

while those in Standard seats gather on floor mats. But honestly, the dining setup isn't the main draw here!

The seating is arranged in a circle around a central stage. There are usually some traditional performances, but most people's attention is elsewhere (and it can be hard to see from a distance anyway).

Finally, it's showtime! Everyone receives a couple of lanterns, and at the synchronized moment, the sky lights up. Because so many people participate, the lanterns just keep ascending, creating an endless stream of light.

Fireworks burst alongside the lanterns, adding another layer of wonder to the experience. It's truly spectacular; you'll find yourself gasping in awe. The show is quite long and features a variety of dazzling displays.

This is truly something you need to see in person, or at least through video. While directly participating in the Chiang Mai Yi Peng festival is an unparalleled experience, watching videos can offer a wonderful virtual journey.

Even after the fireworks fade, you'll remain captivated. The lanterns, having ascended to great heights, begin to resemble a celestial galaxy twinkling in the night sky.

Booking Your Chiang Mai Lantern Festival Experience

To truly witness this spectacle, you'll need to book an organized event and go to their designated venue. The ticket prices can be quite steep – I was surprised at first – but after experiencing it, I genuinely believe it was worth every penny.
Of course, if you connect with local friends or do some digging, you might find places where you can release lanterns for free. However, those spots won't offer the grand, unified spectacle you see in the organized events. That's because it requires thousands of people gathering and releasing lanterns simultaneously. In a way, while the organizers prepare the event, it's us, the attendees, who truly complete the magic by participating!
I had originally planned to compare different options in a table, but it's not really meaningful as each event is run by a different organizer, making a simple price comparison unhelpful.
The first venue I attended was this one, and the prices are definitely on the higher side.
Oh, and I also visited this one.
Both are among the most major and satisfying in terms of scale and overall experience.
Beyond these, there are also some smaller, less prominent venues that I didn't personally visit:
So, there you have it. This pretty much covers the major, well-regarded venues.
I actually planned my entire trip around seeing the Chiang Mai Loy Krathong festival last year because it's truly a once-in-a-lifetime sight. While the admission fee is quite high for Thai standards, I didn't regret it for a second once I was there.
It's genuinely worth the visit.
Seriously.
