GLN is a simple QR code payment system.
It works much like mobile payment apps you might use at home, where you scan a QR code with your phone to complete a transaction.
It links directly to your existing bank account, so you can top it up with local currency and use it without needing a separate currency exchange.

However, it's not universally accepted everywhere.
Acceptance can depend on the type of establishment or the specific QR code format they use,
which I'll explain in more detail below.
How to Install and Link GLN

It's crucial to set this up before you even leave home.
Trying to do it after you arrive in Thailand can be a hassle.
✔️ Install a GLN-supported app (Toss, Hana Bank, KB Kookmin Bank, K Bank, etc.)

✔️ Find the GLN menu within the app

✔️ Complete account linking and identity verification

✔️ Select Transaction Purpose -> Overseas Payment
✔️ Choose Source of Funds

✔️ Register your simple password
(You'll need to enter this every time you open the app!)

✔️ Top up with your local currency

✔️ Scan the QR code and pay at your destination

✔️ The number of supported apps has grown considerably.
You can link GLN through apps like Toss, Hana Bank, KB Kookmin Bank, K Bank, iM Bank,
Naver Pay, and Hana Money.
Where Can You Use GLN in Thailand?

This is the most crucial part.
In Chiang Mai, there's a clear distinction between places that accept GLN and those that don't.
Where GLN is Accepted
✔️ Cafes — Many cafes in Nimmanhaemin and Old Town
✔️ Shopping Malls — Select stores within Maya Mall and One Nimman
✔️ Specialty shops, souvenir stores
✔️ Generally larger businesses!
Where GLN is NOT Accepted
✔️ Ride-sharing apps like InDrive
✔️ Some small, independent cafes and shops
✔️ Night markets
✔️ Even with a QR code, some personal bank account-linked QRs may not work with GLN
Ultimately, the smoothest approach is to use GLN where it's accepted and cash where it's not.
How Much Cash Should You Exchange?

Even with GLN, you'll still need some cash.
Many places in Thailand still operate on a cash-only basis.

For short trips (5-7 nights), I recommend planning for about ~$19-32 in cash per day and covering the rest with GLN.
✔️ 5-7 Nights — Exchange ~$96-160 in cash
✔️ 10+ Nights — Start with ~$192-256 and adjust locally
✔️ One-Month Stay — A combination of GLN and local money changers for cash
For local currency exchange in Chiang Mai,
Mr. Pierre Exchange in Old Town generally offers good rates.
Fees, Limits, and Important Considerations

Fees
GLN payment fees are approximately 0.3%
Thailand Payment Limits
~$128 per transaction, ~$1,280 per day
Important Considerations
✔️ InDrive does not accept GLN payments — cash is essential
✔️ Occasionally, a QR code might not work (e.g., if it's linked to a personal bank account, GLN payment won't be possible)
✔️ Always carry at least a small amount of cash for safety
✔️ Complete all verification steps before you leave home.
Summary and One-Month Usage Review

Based on my actual one-month experience using GLN in Chiang Mai, here's the lowdown:
The Real Perks
✔️ Super convenient for popular restaurants and shopping malls
✔️ It's a top-up system, so any leftover balance can be easily refunded to your bank account.
✔️ Minimizes currency exchange losses since you're exchanging less physical cash.
Areas for Improvement
✔️ Many places like night markets with personal QR codes don't accept it
✔️ It seems to be accepted in fewer places than before.
✔️ Not as universally accepted as physical cash

Conclusion
✔️ Link your account and complete verification before you leave home.
✔️ A 50/50 split between GLN and cash is ideal.
✔️ Carry cash, aiming for ~$19-32 per day as a comfortable buffer.
✔️ Exchange about ~$32 in your home country, then utilize local money changers like Mr. Pierre.
Before your trip to Thailand, definitely get GLN set up for convenience! It's now also available in Vietnam, so keep that in mind for future travels.

The GLN transaction fee in Thailand is approximately 0.3%. The transaction limits are up to ~$128 per transaction and up to ~$1280 per day.
Can I use GLN at Chiang Mai night markets or on ride-hailing apps like inDrive?
GLN cannot be used on ride-hailing apps like inDrive or at night markets. Additionally, it is not accepted at small shops where the QR code is linked to a personal bank account, so you must prepare cash separately.
How much cash should I exchange for a 5-night, 7-day trip to Thailand when using GLN alongside it?
We recommend budgeting ~$19 to ~$32 per day for cash usage, which means exchanging between ~$96 and ~$160 for a 5-night, 7-day trip. If you run out of cash, you can exchange more at Mr. Pierre Exchange located in Chiang Mai's Old City.
Can I install the GLN app and link my bank account after arriving in Thailand?
We do not recommend setting it up after arriving in Thailand, as the identity verification process can be cumbersome. You must install a supported app like Toss or Hana Bank, link your account, and complete identity verification before departing from Korea.
