Immigration Wait Times

Chiang Mai International Airport is relatively small and very easy to navigate.
However, because of its size, lines can back up quickly if multiple international flights land at the same time.

With my TDAC QR code ready, my actual immigration check took literally 1 minute. Baggage claim took another 10 minutes, which wasn't bad at all.
How to Find Your Taxi at the Airport

On my last trip, I just walked up to the official airport taxi counters after grabbing my bags.
The airport is incredibly close to major tourist areas like Old Town, Nimman, and Santitham, meaning fares are very reasonable.
Chiang Mai Airport runs a flat-rate taxi system to the city center for 150 Baht (~$5).
Once you grab your bags, head all the way down to Gate 1 to book and board these official flat-rate taxis. Just note that Gate 1 is at the far end of the terminal, so it is a bit of a walk.

However, if you download ride-hailing apps ahead of time and exchange a small amount of Thai Baht cash, you can call a ride directly to your exit gate. I paid only 59 Baht (~$2) instead of the flat 150 Baht (~$5), saving about $3 right off the bat!
Grab vs. InDrive: How to Score the Cheapest Fare

Here is what you can expect to pay from Chiang Mai Airport (CNX) to Old Town or Nimman:
✅ Official Airport Taxi (Flat Rate): 150 Baht (~$5)
✅ Grab (with credit card pre-registered): Around 120 Baht (~$4)

If you want the absolute cheapest rate, do what I did and ride for only 59 Baht (~$2):
✅ Download the InDrive app before you leave home.
✅ Message your driver with your exact location (Gate Number). I usually walk out of the terminal and request a pickup at Gate 8. It is much closer and less crowded than Gate 1!
✅ Keep in mind that InDrive is cash-only, so you must have Thai Baht cash on hand.
I used InDrive over 30 times during my stay in Chiang Mai. It easily saved me around $20 to $30 in total transportation costs, and the cash-only aspect was never an issue!
