Cheongju Early Printing Museum: Jikji and the Art of Movable Type
Looking for unique indoor activities in Cheongju? The Early Printing Museum offers a fascinating journey into Korea's printing history, revealing the intricate process behind Jikji and movable type. An engaging experience for all ages!

If you're wondering where to go indoors in Cheongju,
the Cheongju Early Printing Museum is definitely a spot worth checking out!
It's a museum showcasing Jikji and the incredible art of metal movable type, but stepping inside, I realized it was so much more than just a place to gaze at ancient books;
it was an exciting journey of discovery, answering the question: 'How exactly did they make books back in the day?'

It's fantastic for immersive history experiences with children, and even for couples like us,
it was also perfect for a casual stroll.
I have to say, what truly captivated me even more than Jikji itself was
the fascinating process of how movable metal type was crafted.
That really stuck with me!
So, that day, we had actually planned to
book a table at Jochiwon Cottage Pizza,
and were just exploring the neighborhood.
Then, I honestly can't even remember what my husband and I were chatting about, haha,
but all of a sudden, the topic of Jikji Simche Yojeol came up!

And just like that, it was, "Hey, maybe we should check out the Cheongju Early Printing Museum?!"
The conversation flowed, and we ended up going all the way to Cheongju! haha
It's only about a 40-minute drive from Jochiwon, so even if you're not planning a full day in Cheongju,
it's definitely a worthwhile distance to combine with your itinerary around Sejong or Jochiwon.
What Made It Even More Fascinating Than Jikji:
The Process of Crafting Metal Movable Type

The Cheongju Early Printing Museum is a fascinating place centered around Jikji, where you can delve into Korea's rich printing culture.

Initially, I expected most of the exhibits to be about Jikji, but as I explored, the process of crafting metal movable type turned out to be incredibly fascinating!

I used to only imagine the final, tiny metal types, but watching the step-by-step process of how each individual type was created made it so much easier to grasp the intricate printing technology of that era. And it was really cool to compare the different metal types, each with its unique typeface!
So, if you're exploring indoor attractions in Cheongju and you're the kind of explorer who loves to truly discover and learn something new, rather than just passively observing exhibits, then this place will absolutely resonate with you!
Exploring Woodblock Printing Alongside Metal Movable Type

The woodblock exhibition also left a strong impression on me.

What really caught my eye was a woodblock featuring a human portrait, and I remember my husband and I staring at it for ages, thinking, "Is this someone super important?!" haha.
While I didn't quite catch who the person was, for me, who had only ever imagined woodblocks carved with text, the very idea of a human figure being depicted on a woodblock was absolutely astounding!

As I was browsing the exhibition, I was reminded of a childhood memory: doing a woodblock printing activity at a museum, pressing paper onto a block.
I don't recall exactly where that hands-on experience took place, but having a direct, hands-on experience like that definitely seems to stick with you for a long time.
(I suspect it was the Cheongju Early Printing Museum, but I'm not sure! haha)
Perfect for Exploring with Kids Too!

The day I visited,
I saw children and their teachers
exploring the exhibition hall together.

Initially, I wasn't sure if the concept of metal movable type would truly capture the attention of kids, but seeing their eyes sparkle as they listened to the explanations, it seemed they were far more intrigued than I imagined!

The second floor also features a children's experience room,
so if you're visiting with elementary school-aged children,
it would be wonderful to connect what they learn in school with history here.
But don't think it's just for kids!
My husband and I visited as a couple without children and had a fantastic time.
If you recall learning about Jikji in your history textbooks,
seeing the actual metal type and the entire production process firsthand
will give you that "Aha! So this is what it was like!" moment,
making the history come alive in a really engaging way.
