New York & Cancun Honeymoon: Cancun #6

Hey guys! It's Bamkki here.
To be honest, doing packed activities wasn't my main reason
for choosing Cancun as our honeymoon destination.
We fully planned on just lounging at our resort...!
But the one and only excursion we booked was the "Pink-Se-Chi" Tour,
and it was a solid 10/10!
It's a full-day tour, so it can be quite exhausting, but
honestly, going to Cancun and skipping this tour is just... a crime? lol
Haha! 😂
Anyway, here's why I highly recommend it,
along with my honest, unfiltered review.
Pink-Se-Chi Tour |
1. What is the Cancun 'Pink-Se-Chi' Tour?
The name "Pink-Se-Chi" sounds like an acronym, right? And you'd be spot on!
These are top-tier sights located a bit far from Cancun,
but they're packaged together so you can easily hit them all
in a single day-trip excursion.
Pink Lagoon
Ik Kil Senote
Chichen Itza

Just a heads-up: the itinerary is no joke.
It's not just a quick 8-hour trip;
you'll leave around 5:00 AM and return after 8:00 PM,
making it a packed 12 to 13-hour day.
But as you can see from the map,
it's almost impossible to navigate on your own without a rental car,
and even if you do rent a car, the drive is so long and exhausting.
Booking an organized tour is definitely the best way to keep your peace of mind! ><
Since I traveled independently,
I booked the HK Tour package separately on MyRealTrip.
Even if you book through other packages,
it seems most of them lead back to this HK Tour anyway!

2. Pro Tips for Booking the Cancun Pink-Se-Chi Tour
As I mentioned briefly above,
the reason I booked this full-day tour on MyRealTrip
is because the route is incredibly tough to do on your own,
and I wanted to efficiently knock out all the major sights in one day lol.
Our schedule almost got messy,
so I also looked up other tours on KKday and Klook.
But for non-Korean tours,
almost none of them hit all three spots in one day!
Shout out to the notoriously efficient and hardworking Koreans... 😂

Plus, looking back after the trip,
a place rich in history like Chichen Itza really needs a proper guide,
so hearing the explanation in your own native language (or Korean for us)
makes the experience so much more engaging and meaningful!
Because of that,
I absolutely recommend booking this Pink-Se-Chi tour on MyRealTrip! 😎
Also, wouldn't it be such a waste to pay for a luxury all-inclusive resort
only to spend the entire day outside on a tour?
So, do what we did: book a budget-friendly hotel in the Hotel Zone
for a 2-night, 3-day stay, and fit the tour right in the middle!

3. My Honest Review of the Pink-Se-Chi Tour
I did this tour right at the end of the year,
visiting on December 30th.
With so many travelers coming from the US and Europe
to spend the New Year holidays here,
Cancun was absolutely packed!
But thanks to our seasoned guide,
we adjusted the itinerary slightly to beat the crowds,
allowing us to explore at a relaxed pace
with minimal waiting.
While most tours head to the Pink Lagoon first,
we decided to do an early "open run" at Chichen Itza,
which we knew would get the most crowded!

I recall our tour group had about 15 people.
They could have easily accepted more bookings,
but the guide mentioned they capped it early
to avoid the chaotic tour bus traffic around Chichen Itza, haha.
(I thought it would only be honeymooners,
but there were also quite a few families with kids vacationing from North America!)
Since the first stretch of driving is quite long,
we made a quick pitstop at a rest area with restrooms and vending machines.
On the way, we watched the movie Apocalypto in the van,
which gave us a great baseline understanding
of what Chichen Itza was like back in the day.
(The guide did warn us that it's pretty graphic, so parents with kids should watch out! lol)
Valladolid

While it wasn't originally
part of our official itinerary,
we had a bit of time to spare before Chichen Itza opened, so we made a quick stop at
the nearby town of Valladolid.
Since it was established during the Spanish colonial era,
it still beautifully preserves its charming Spanish architecture.
Chichen Itza

Next up: arriving at Chichen Itza right as it opens!
This is an ancient ruins site and the heart of the Mayan civilization.
Can you see how insanely crowded it is?
If you travel here solo, you'd have to fight through this crowd just to buy tickets...
So seriously, just book a tour, guys!!!!!!
To put it simply, Chichen Itza is
where you go to see Mexico's famous pyramids!
Since there isn't much shade and it can get super hot,
I loved that they provided cold bottled water from the van haha.

The weather absolutely made our day at Chichen Itza in Cancun...
It's hard to grasp the sheer scale from photos alone,
so I've included a photo with people in it for scale! haha
There are many structures around,
but this is El Castillo, the iconic symbol of Chichen Itza.
Considering it was built around 1000 AD,
it's mind-blowing how they managed to construct such a massive temple
all those centuries ago.

Our guide gave us tons of fascinating explanations.
Like what this building represents...
and how El Castillo wasn't just randomly built,
but aligned precisely with the angle of the sun, and so on!
I'll write up a detailed separate review post about it later! ><
Anyway, these details are actually quite complex,
so I thought to myself, "If I had taken an English-only tour
without a proper guide, I wouldn't have understood a single thing..."
If you're traveling with kids,
I highly recommend booking a guide who speaks your native language!!!!!!!

We got some free time to wander around,
and the guide was nice enough to snap some photos for us during this time too!
Ik Kil Cenote

If you search for Ik Kil Cenote online,
it comes up as a "natural sinkhole" hahahaha.
Well... they aren't wrong. If you look at the photos, it really is a sinkhole lol.
Hahahahaha.
Basically, it's a natural cave pool,
and since there's also a restaurant on-site,
this is where we had lunch and enjoyed some free time swimming!

Since we arrived a bit early,
there were no other groups around, and we had the place to ourselves
to enjoy a relaxed and comfortable meal.
It was a buffet style where staff served the food onto our plates.
Though the variety wasn't as massive as a typical buffet,
it was filled with delicious options that really hit the spot,
featuring meats, rice dishes, and fresh veggies.
It was absolutely perfect for fueling up before jumping into the water!

Alright, I admit it really is a sinkhole... lol.
Instead of a cave stretching out horizontally,
it's a deep vertical drop with water at the bottom,
and that's where you swim!
The weather made this experience absolutely magical too.
Looking up at the sky from deep inside
was so incredibly beautiful,
it was pure bliss to just float around in a life jacket.
I'll share details about the changing rooms, diving, and other tips
in a more detailed review post later!
Las Coloradas (Pink Lagoon)

Our final stop was the Pink Lagoon,
but unfortunately, the weather started to turn grey.
The sky was completely covered in clouds and the wind got super strong.
If only it had been sunny, the pink water would have popped beautifully...

Since entry to the Pink Lagoon itself is only allowed
with their official local guides,
we had two or three local guides accompany us.
In exchange for a small tip, they took absolutely tons of photos of us! Haha.
This was hands down the day we took the most photos in Cancun.
So glad we decided to wear matching couple outfits! ☆
- Hotel pick-up & drop-off
- Admission tickets for all attractions
- Lunch at Ik Kil Cenote
- Bottled water
Everything is fully included,
and you get to cover all the top sights in just one single day,
so I highly, highly recommend it! ☆

The Pink-Se-Chi Tour takes about 12 to 13 hours, departing at 5:00 AM and returning after 8:00 PM. It visits the Pink Lagoon, Ik Kil Cenote, and Chichen Itza, and depending on the schedule, it may also make a brief stop in Valladolid.
Ik Kil Cenote is a natural sinkhole cave pool where you can freely enjoy swimming. For lunch, a buffet featuring meat, rice, and vegetables is provided, catering well to Korean tastes.
Since the tour takes up the entire day, you will barely have any time to spend at an expensive all-inclusive resort. Therefore, it is recommended to book a cost-effective hotel like Aloft Cancun for 3 days and 2 nights, and go on the tour on the middle day.
You can only enter the Pink Lagoon if accompanied by a local guide from the attraction itself. During the tour, 2 to 3 local guides will join you, and in exchange for tips, they will take plenty of photos for the tourists.
