British Pound Exchange: Best Rates,
and My Airport Pickup Experience

If you're gearing up for a trip to the UK in 2026, you're probably wondering,
'Do I really need to exchange physical British Pounds?' Having recently visited London,
I found that almost everywhere accepts card payments, so I barely needed cash!
However, if you're like me and plan to take tours during your trip, you might need cash for
admission fees or tips. For that reason, I recommend exchanging a small amount of Pounds before you go.
Today, I'll share my experience with **exchanging British Pounds, finding preferential rates,**
**and picking up my currency at the airport.**
Unlike US Dollars, **British Pounds** often don't come with high preferential exchange rates.
Among the major banks, a **50% preferential rate** was about the best I could find.
Even with a 50% rate, I only planned to exchange a small amount, so I went ahead with the application without hesitation.
If you're using a **mobile banking app for your exchange application**, you can follow a similar process to what I describe below.
(Most banking apps have a similar flow, so this can serve as a general guide!)

[Your Bank App] - [Menu] - [Foreign Exchange] - [Exchange Application]
Navigate through your banking app to find the 'Foreign Exchange' or 'Currency Exchange' service and click to apply.

Once you enter the amount of Pounds you want to exchange, the app will automatically display
the equivalent in your local currency, the preferential exchange rate, and the discounted amount.
Make sure you have enough funds in your account for the exchange to go through.
I exchanged 150 Pounds with a 50% preferential rate. At an approximate exchange rate of ~$1.31 per Pound (based on 1900 KRW/GBP and 1449 KRW/USD), this cost me about ~$197.
(The preferential discount was only about ~$2, so it wasn't a huge saving, but every little bit helps!)
Next, you'll be able to choose your **pickup method**.
You can usually opt for airport pickup, a local branch, or sometimes even a foreign currency wallet service.
Since I was traveling soon, I selected **'Airport Pickup'** to collect it right before my flight.

The app even allowed me to select the pickup date and the denominations I wanted, which was very convenient.
If you're unsure, it's generally easier to get more 10 and 20 Pound notes rather than 50 Pound notes, as smaller denominations are more widely accepted for minor purchases.
Double-check the details through the 'Transaction History' or 'Detailed View' to confirm your pickup date, location, and amount.

Once your exchange application is complete, you'll typically receive a notification (like a text or app alert)
confirming the **airport exchange counter location**.
Most major departure terminals have multiple exchange counters, so you can head to the one closest to your check-in area.
Keep in mind that British Pounds are usually not available for ATM pickup, so you'll need to go directly to the counter.

I collected my British Pounds at the Incheon Airport Terminal 1 exchange counter.
Remember to bring your ID (passport or driver's license) for pickup, as proxy pickups are not allowed.

While there are ATMs next to the counter, as I mentioned earlier, British Pounds are not available for ATM withdrawal.
(Currencies typically available for ATM pickup include US Dollars, Chinese Yuan, Japanese Yen, and Euros.)

I simply **presented my ID and received my currency immediately**, and the teller even confirmed the denominations with me before handing them over.
The entire process, from applying for currency exchange to picking it up, was incredibly straightforward and hassle-free.
Many busy professionals often don't have time to visit a bank in the city, and finding branches that stock British Pounds can be a challenge.
So, if you need physical Pounds for your UK visit, I highly recommend **picking them up conveniently at the airport!**
