Breathes Coffee Works Gyeongju Review: Lakeview Cafe

If I had to recommend just one cafe to visit in Gyeongju,

I would choose this place without a single hesitation.

During my travels around Gyeongju, I visited several massive "mega-cafes,"

but Breathes Coffee Works operates on an entirely different level.

Rather than just grabbing a quick caffeine fix,

it feels like visiting an architectural museum.

The moment you step inside, the design takes your breath away.

Why is this building so special?

This isn't just another Instagrammable spot. Designed by architect Kim Geon-cheol of Smart Architecture, who won the 2024 Young Architect Award, this space was five years in the making and even received the top honor at the 2025 Gyeongsangbuk-do Architecture Awards.

The highlight is how it modernizes the traditional Hanok joinery system (the interlocking of pillars and beams). Inside, you'll experience a rhythmic, wooden structural flow that feels incredibly sleek and contemporary, almost like a high-end art gallery. Even if you aren't an architecture buff, you can't help but admire the design.

The stunning reflecting pool and reservoir views

Perched on a hill overlooking Hadong Reservoir, the cafe offers sweeping vistas. But they took it a step further: an artificial reflecting pool sits right in front of the building, creating an infinity-pool effect where the water seems to merge with the sky.

By layering the smaller pool in front of the massive reservoir, the building and sky reflect beautifully on the water's surface. On a clear day, capturing this reflection photo alone makes the entire trip worthwhile.

Artisan pastries and custom-roasted coffee

The pastries are in a league of their own. Their signature item is the "Breathes-ant" (Bressan)—a custom croissant made with premium French butter. It's perfectly flaky on the outside and wonderfully soft and airy on the inside. It's definitely not your average coffee shop pastry.

As an in-house roastery, the coffee quality is exceptional. Pairing a Breathes-ant with a freshly brewed cup makes it easy to see why they spent five years perfecting this concept.

Even the cups are handcrafted masterpieces

Breathes Coffee Works defines itself as a cultural space where tradition meets craft. Throughout the cafe, you'll find exquisite handmade items by local artisans.

Instead of mass-produced mugs, your coffee is served in beautiful, hand-fired ceramic cups created by local artists. This attention to detail elevates the entire experience, seamlessly blending architecture, coffee, and craftsmanship.

Finding a seat in this massive space

To be honest, it gets incredibly busy. As one of Gyeongju's trendiest spots, weekends are packed. However, because of its massive scale, finding a seat is rarely an issue. With indoor seating, an outdoor garden, and a scenic rooftop, there's always a cozy corner to claim.

The indoor parking lot connects directly to the cafe, which is super convenient.

However, because of its popularity,

parking can still be a bit of a challenge during peak hours.

Since it's located toward Bulguksa Temple, slightly away from the main downtown area (Hwangridan-gil), it's best to plan your itinerary in advance. To beat the weekend crowds, try visiting right at opening or in the late afternoon.
