Craving authentic fish and chips in London? Discover Ben's Traditional Fish & Chips in Soho, a local favorite offering crispy cod and delicious chips. Perfect for a casual meal near the British Museum!
When you think of iconic British cuisine, what’s the first dish that comes to mind?
For most, it’s undoubtedly Fish & Chips.
On my recent trip to London, I made it a mission to find the best, most authentic fish and chips experience.
Today, I'm thrilled to share a spot that exceeded all my expectations:
Ben's Traditional Fish & Chips in the vibrant Soho district!
Top Pick: London Soho Fish & Chips
Ben's Traditional Fish & Chips
Opening Hours: Daily 12:00 PM - 11:00 PM
Location: 200 Shaftesbury Ave, London WC2H 8JL, UK
Ben's Traditional Fish & Chips is conveniently located between the lively Soho area and the majestic British Museum.
If you're exploring either of these iconic London landmarks, it's definitely worth a stop!
My partner and I stumbled upon it for a casual lunch on our way to the British Museum.
It's easy to spot, situated right on a main road.
Seeing people enjoying their meals on the outdoor terrace from a distance instantly confirmed we'd made a great choice!
Ben's Traditional Fish & Chips: Ambiance & Menu
Besides the terrace, there’s also indoor seating.
Since the weather was gorgeous that day, we opted for a spot on the terrace.
The terrace seating is generally more spacious than inside, and it helps avoid that fried food smell clinging to your clothes.
If the weather permits, I highly recommend dining outside!
Menu
Fish & Chips £16.50
Cod
Haddock
Chicken Breast Burger £11.50
Veggie Burger £10.50
Chicken Nugget Burger £10.50
Soft Drinks, Water £2.50
Beer £6.00-£7.50
Given its prime location in Soho, the Fish & Chips were priced at £16.50, which, converted from the original 31,400 KRW, is about ~$22. It's not the cheapest meal, but fair for central London.
They offer a wider variety of fish than some other shops, with Cod and Haddock being the most popular choices.
We went with the classic Cod, but feel free to pick based on your preference!
Beyond fish and chips, their menu also includes burgers, pies, sausages, salads, desserts, and various beverages.
My Fish & Chips Review
The table was already set with essential condiments to pair with our fish and chips.
We had mayonnaise, ketchup, salt, pepper, and a delicious tartar sauce (which was my personal favorite!).
📍Camden Hells Beer £7.50
Before our main dish arrived, our Camden Hells Beer was served.
The staff recommended Camden Hells as a popular local London beer, so I didn't hesitate to order this lager.
It had a smooth finish that perfectly complemented the fish and chips.
If it weren't for the price, I would have definitely ordered another!
If you're unsure which beer to choose or you're a fan of lagers, I highly recommend giving it a try!
📍Fish & Chips (COD) £16.50
Fish and chips, a classic British staple, arrived with a generous portion of fried fish and a hearty serving of fries.
The portion size is quite substantial and can be a bit rich, so instead of ordering one per person, you might consider sharing a plate or ordering it alongside another menu item.
As a couple, we found one order of fish and chips was plenty for us to share.
Just looking at it, you can tell the cod and chips were fried to a perfect crisp.
And we all know, crispy fried food is delicious fried food!
The cod was so crispy yet cut so smoothly, I couldn't wait to dig in!
You can almost hear the satisfying crunch!
The cod fillet was the epitome of "crispy on the outside, tender on the inside."
The delicate, savory flakes of cod combined with the crunchy batter were simply perfect, and it paired wonderfully with the Camden Hells beer!
I'd worried about any potential fishiness, but there was absolutely none!
Dipping the fish and chips alternately in ketchup, mayonnaise, and especially the tartar sauce made every bite even more delicious!
The tangy kick of the tartar sauce perfectly cut through the richness of the fried food, hitting just the right spot for me.
Not just the fish, but the chips were also wonderfully crispy and chunky, making them incredibly moreish!
The portion of fries was surprisingly generous, too.
For two people, it made for a perfectly satisfying meal.
Searching for a Great Spot in London Soho?
If you're on the hunt for an excellent fish and chips restaurant near London's Soho district,
I truly hope you'll give Ben's Traditional Fish & Chips a visit.
Enjoying our meal on the terrace on a pleasantly cool day, watching the world go by, made me feel like a true local – it was such a great vibe.
And the crispy-on-the-outside, tender-on-the-inside fried fish and chips are universally appealing; anyone is sure to love them.
Just remember, the portions are quite large, so I'd suggest sharing one order of fish and chips between two people, or adding another side dish to complement it.
So go ahead, grab some fish and chips and truly soak in that authentic British travel experience!
