After crossing the border from Uzbekistan, while waiting for our flight back home the next day, we stumbled upon a real culinary find in Shymkent. A quick search on Google Maps revealed Barvilla, boasting an impressive 4.5-star rating for its horse meat steak, which immediately piqued our interest.
After dining there, it was clear why the ratings were so high. In this post, I'll share my personal experience at Barvilla, where I indulged in both their signature horse meat steak and a classic beef steak.

Barvilla is truly a restaurant nestled within a city park, living up to its "Park Kitchen" concept. This unique setting immediately sets a relaxed and inviting atmosphere.
A distinguishing feature is the involvement of a Canadian brand chef, who curates a menu centered around charcoal-grilled, barbecued, and grilled dishes.
The menu is surprisingly extensive, offering categories like salads, appetizers, soups, various steaks, main courses, garnishes, shashlik & grill options, decadent desserts, refreshing drinks, pasta, and even pizza. Even though we arrived late, having such a wide array of delicious choices made us incredibly happy!
02. Our Dining Experience
We ordered a feta cheese salad, the renowned horse meat steak, and a classic beef steak. To our delight, the dishes arrived incredibly quickly!
Honestly, I had some reservations about trying horse meat, but upon tasting it, any worries about a gamey flavor instantly vanished. There was barely any discernible 'off' taste.
Perhaps it was the accompanying wine sauce, but the rich, savory notes of the meat were beautifully enhanced. The potatoes served as a garnish were perfectly cooked, and the side of pickled cucumbers provided a refreshing counterpoint, allowing us to enjoy the meat without feeling overwhelmed, bite after delicious bite.
Our server skillfully carved the meat right at our table. Since it was charcoal-grilled, the exterior was wonderfully crisp while the inside remained incredibly tender and juicy. I've had horse meat in Almaty before, and it seems all the horse meat I've tried in Kazakhstan has been consistently tender, flavorful, and free of any unwanted tastes!
Mid-meal, I honestly couldn't tell the difference between the horse and beef — both were so tender and utterly delicious that I just enjoyed every bite! We ordered our steaks medium-rare, and the doneness was absolutely perfect.
For drinks, we ordered beer and water. I was particularly thrilled when they brought out an ice bucket with our water – as someone who loves ice-cold water, this thoughtful touch made me incredibly happy! What amazing attention to detail! 🤍
And the best part? After settling the bill, the total for two steaks, a salad, beer, and water came out to only ~$48! My friend and I left feeling incredibly satisfied and happy, amazed at how such a hearty, delicious meal could be so affordable!
