Almaty boasts a surprisingly vibrant scene of stylish cafes and fantastic restaurants.

Fika, in particular, stands out. It's even been featured in international design magazines, making it one of the most atmospheric cafes in Almaty.

01. What Makes Fika Special

Fika is a truly unique space, much like the trendy Seongsu-dong district in Seoul. It's housed in a former Soviet-era railway worker's building, beautifully renovated by Almaty's local design studio, NAAW.

They've skillfully preserved the 1950s Soviet-style ceiling moldings while adding modern concrete details, creating a truly distinctive atmosphere.

The name Fika comes from Swedish, meaning 'to drink coffee' or 'coffee time' – essentially, a moment to pause and chat over a cup of coffee.

The space itself draws inspiration from Copenhagen's vibrant cafe culture, resulting in a fascinating blend of Eastern European and Scandinavian aesthetics.

You'll notice many of the interior decor pieces have a distinct Nordic feel!

02. Location, Hours & Essential Information

The cafe is conveniently located not far from Almaty's city center.

For first-time visitors who might be unsure of the central area, Fika is just a 5-10 minute taxi ride from the bustling Almaty Arbat street and near Panfilov Park.

The area around the nearby Opera Theatre also has a wonderful vibe!

The building itself has a classic Soviet-era exterior, which can be easy to miss, so keep an eye out for this distinct facade!

Opening at 8:00 AM daily, Fika is the perfect spot for a leisurely morning coffee before you start your Almaty sightseeing.

And since it stays open until 11:00 PM, it's also ideal for a post-dinner dessert. Both the coffee, desserts, and the ambiance truly exceeded our expectations.

We visited specifically for dessert after our evening meal.

03. Menu & Our Coffee and Dessert Review

Upon entering, we were surprised by how spacious the cafe is. To the left, there's a bar-style coffee counter and an open bakery. Further inside, the space opens up to a warm yellow wall and comfortable large sofa seating.

We settled into one of the inner seating areas, and a menu was promptly brought to our table.

Visiting in the evening, we noticed they also offer alcoholic beverages like cocktails, vodka, and beer.

We ordered a matcha castella and apple pie with ice cream, along with two warm lattes.

(We actually went to the counter to order so we could see the displayed cakes!)

Soon after, our coffee and desserts were served to our table.

The latte art was adorable, and with the first sip, I was impressed by the perfect balance of milk and espresso – truly delightful.

The apple pie was served warm, and the combination of the warm pie with cold vanilla ice cream was simply divine. The matcha tiramisu wasn't overly sweet and had a wonderfully smooth texture, making it incredibly enjoyable!

We had just eaten a hearty lamb dinner, but somehow managed to devour all our desserts here... 🤤

The cups had a clean, cute design, and we noticed the Fika name subtly printed at the bottom after finishing our drinks!

With its late operating hours, it's a fantastic spot for a chat with friends, and the walk there was lovely. If you're heading to Almaty, I highly recommend checking out Fika!
