Kazakhstan: Almaty Itinerary for an Unforgettable Parent Trip
Dreaming of a special trip with your parents? Explore Almaty, Kazakhstan! We reveal why its stunning natural beauty and comfortable pace make it ideal for mature travelers.

Hello, I'm Seulseuring, your travel influencer!
It had been a long-held dream of mine to take an overseas trip with just my mom before her 60th birthday~
However, whenever I planned international trips with my parents,
I always found myself wrestling with similar dilemmas!
I always wanted to show them breathtaking scenery,
but I also wanted to avoid trips that involved too much walking or difficult travel.
So, even before embarking on our trip to Kazakhstan with my mom, who's in her 50s,
I kept wondering, 'Will Mom truly enjoy this?'
I'm excited to share the aspects I pondered,
one by one, below!
Preparing for a Kazakhstan Trip with Parents |
1. Why Kazakhstan? |
2. Top Travel Itineraries |
3. Travel Costs Comparison [Package vs. Independent Travel] |
4. If I Went Again? |
This post on preparing for a Kazakhstan trip with parents will follow the order above~
1. Why Kazakhstan?

What kind of destination would Mom enjoy?
Would she like unfamiliar countries?
I had so many worries.
But once we actually went, it turned out to be completely different from what I expected!
What Mom loved most wasn't the glamorous city life, but the overwhelming natural beauty we encountered in the outskirts of Almaty💚
What was particularly impressive was realizing that you could experience landscapes typically found in the US, Canada, or Switzerland with just a 7-hour flight!
For those who find the high travel costs of visiting the US, Canada, or Switzerland with their parents a bit daunting,
I wholeheartedly recommend Kazakhstan!!
2. Top Travel Itineraries

Kazakhstan is the 9th largest country in the world,
which means it's perfect for exploring a diverse range of natural wonders!
📍Charyn Canyon, Moon Canyon, Black Canyon
When I talk about traveling in Kazakhstan,
Charyn Canyon is the first place that always comes to mind.
A massive, reddish canyon stretches out endlessly,
and its sheer scale felt so much grander when I saw it in person
compared to photos!

While it often brings to mind the Grand Canyon in the US,
I think it's more accurate to see it as Kazakhstan's unique and rugged natural landscape
rather than just 'similar' once you experience it firsthand~
Even Mom spent a long time gazing at the scenery here.
If you're planning a trip to Almaty with your parents,
the very fact that you can witness such awe-inspiring nature firsthand
is a huge advantage.

📍Kolsai Lake
If Charyn Canyon offered the grandeur of immense gorges,
Kolsai Lake presents a completely different ambiance.
With crystal-clear lakes surrounded by mountains,
it felt like stepping right into a movie scene.
The scenery created by the surrounding mountains and the lake
together was truly beautiful.
So, during our Kazakhstan trip,
I didn't have to worry about thinking, 'What if we just keep seeing the same type of scenery?'
Because we saw canyons, then lakes,
and then encountered other natural wonders –
the atmosphere at each location was distinctly unique💚

📍Lake Kaindy
One spot you simply can't miss on an Almaty trip is
Lake Kaindy.
This place is famous for its unique sight of trees
rising directly out of the lake~
With submerged trees revealing their trunks
above the water,
it has a completely different vibe from typical mountain lakes.
Even though it's a landscape created by nature,
it felt almost surreal the first time I saw it!
I actually felt this aspect added a unique charm
to our Kazakhstan trip with my parents🌟
It's not just a trip to check off famous tourist spots, but
because I can show you nature that’s often hard to witness!

📍Almaty City Center
A trip to Almaty isn't just about immersing yourself in nature.
You can also soak in the vibrant urban atmosphere right in Almaty city!
Explore iconic Almaty landmarks like Zenkov Cathedral,
and by strolling through local markets or the city streets,
you'll get a glimpse into the everyday life of Kazakhstan.

That's why, if you're visiting Kazakhstan for the first time,
I'd recommend an itinerary that includes an Almaty city tour
rather than just focusing solely on natural attractions!
The awe-inspiring feeling you get from nature combined with the authentic local vibe of the city
creates such a rich and diverse travel experience.
3. Travel Expense Comparison
Per person | Independent Travel | Package Tour |
Airfare | ~$657-~$803 | Includes airfare, canyons, lakes, city tours – all inclusive No shopping stops No optional excursions |
3 nights, 5 days hotel | ~$255
Canyon & Lake Tour | ~$146
Transportation & Entrance Fees | ~$109
Meals & Snacks | ~$146 | |
Total | Around ~$1,460 |
Believe it or not, there's surprisingly no significant price difference between independent travel and a package tour...!!!!
In fact, independent travel can actually be more challenging.
!! The reason is simple!!
The attractions you want to visit are not conveniently located close to each other.
To truly experience nearby natural attractions like Charyn Canyon, Kolsai Lake, and Kaindy Lake,
long-distance car travel is absolutely necessary.
And for travelers not familiar with Russian or Kazakh,
personally arranging local transportation and itineraries
can be quite tricky.
Even when I traveled to Kazakhstan with my mother in her 50s,
I realized that **'this route would be much more comfortable with a package tour**
**that includes transportation and a planned itinerary, rather than independent travel!'**
Here's the link!
4. If I Went to Kazakhstan Again?

To put it simply,
it would be a tour, no question!!!!
Especially if you're traveling with your parents,
it's much more relaxing to move according to a fixed itinerary
than to constantly worry about transportation even before reaching the attractions~
If I were to plan a trip to Kazakhstan again,
since the price is the same as independent travel,
honestly... I'd definitely opt for a tour.
As a travel influencer, I've been on countless trips,
but preparing for Kazakhstan was by far the most challenging.
The language barrier and the scarcity of information were significant hurdles in planning the trip!
There's a fantastic range of Kazakhstan tours available, covering not just Almaty but also the majestic Aktau mountain range~
Key Features | Reason |
No shopping stops | Allows you to focus on sightseeing |
No optional excursions | Reduces the burden of additional local costs |
Charyn Canyon, etc. Kolsai Lake Kaindy Lake | Majestic natural landscapes of the canyon Scenery where mountains and lakes harmonize Unique submerged petrified forest scenery |
Almaty City | Enables nature + city travel |
Included transportation | Reduces the burden of long-distance travel to nearby areas |
Guidance in Korean | Reduces the burden of Russian communication |
Especially when choosing Almaty travel packages,
don't just look for the phrase 'Kazakhstan included',
but make sure that the natural attractions you genuinely want to see
are actually part of the package!~
The grandeur of Charyn Canyon,
the serene lakes of Kolsai,
the unique landscapes of Kaindy,
and even the perpetual snows at 3200m above sea level –
Experiencing a different natural wonder
every single day was truly delightful.
So, if you're thinking about a trip to Almaty with your parents,
don't just stop at 'Where exactly is Kazakhstan?'
Start by exploring what kind of natural beauty awaits you there!
