Hello fellow global explorers! Hyery's travel journal kicks off today 🌏
If I had to pick just one place in Kazakhstan that unveiled the most mysterious scenery during my trip, I would absolutely say Kaindy Lake!
It's renowned for its unique and captivating landscape, where trees dramatically rise right out of the water, creating an atmosphere so magical it feels like fairies could emerge at any moment!
I personally opted for a rental car, but I'll also share insights by comparing it with bundled tours that include both Charyn Canyon and Kolsai Lake 🩵

1. What Kind of Place is Kaindy Lake?

📍 Kaindy
Kaindy, Kazakhstan
Kaindy Lake is an incredible day trip destination near Almaty, perfect for truly immersing yourself in Kazakhstan's breathtaking natural beauty!
This stunning lake was formed after the Kemin earthquake blocked off a valley, leading to a unique landscape where a pre-existing spruce forest became submerged, with the upper parts of the trees dramatically remaining above the water's surface.
Seeing these trees majestically rising from the water firsthand, a sight you won't easily find anywhere else, truly enveloped me in an even more magical and mysterious atmosphere! 🧚🏻♂️
2. How to Get to Kaindy Lake

Kaindy Lake is a bit tricky to get to via public transportation, so your best bets are either a rental car or joining a dedicated tour.

📍 Kaindy Horse Ranch/Main Parking Lot

A > B: Round trip Furgon 20,000 ~ 25,000 Tenge
B > C: One-way Furgon taxi 1,000 Tenge
While you *can* follow the methods above if you opt for a rental car, be aware that the travel distance is quite extensive, and it ended up being more physically demanding than I anticipated... 🥹

That's why, if you're planning a visit to Kaindy Lake, I highly recommend combining it with nearby Charyn Canyon for a fantastic day tour!
3. How to Book a Kaindy Lake Day Tour
Unlike most popular tourist spots, getting to Kaindy Lake can be quite complex: even after arriving by rental car, you'll need to transfer to a Furgon twice to reach the lake itself. And yes, that might even include haggling for the Furgon price...

So, if you're planning to visit Charyn Canyon and Kolsai Lake alongside Kaindy Lake, I definitely want to recommend booking a tour! It'll save you hassle with transportation and keep your energy levels up!

4. Kaindy Lake Travel Review

📍 Kolsay Kazakh Village
Ултаракова 4А, Saty, Kazakhstan
Next to the Azs gas station in Saty Village,
many Furgons heading to Kaindy Lake were waiting in the parking lot.
The road to Kaindy Lake is rough,
so you have to rent a car under the condition of not driving there,
and then switch to a Furgon!

We paid for the round-trip from Saty Village > Kaindy Lake parking lot,
and took the Furgon for 25,000 Tenge.
I saw last year's price was 5,000 Tenge,
so the Furgon price has gone up a lot 😮💨
(On the bright side, we didn't have to pay a separate entrance fee for the lake!)
They said the price usually went up to around ~$14-~$17,
but I didn't even have the energy to bargain...

After experiencing it myself, the road there was incredibly unpaved, so I understood why rental car companies prohibit driving on it...
It felt like the bottom of the car would break apart...

📍 Kaindy Horse Ranch/Main Parking Lot
XFW4+PW, Saty, Kazakhstan
After a 20-minute drive, when you arrive at Kaindy Lake parking lot,
you'll be given about an hour and a half for sightseeing.
The driver will wait in the parking lot,
and will let you know when to return by the agreed time.
Just make sure to be back by then!
(We paid after everything was done.)

From the Kaindy Lake parking lot to Kaindy Lake itself,
you can choose to go by horse or Furgon.
Horses seemed expensive, so we opted for the Furgon.
It operates on a system where it departs when it's full,
and the Furgon taxi is 1,000 Tenge one-way.
It's doubled compared to last year.... 🫠

After about a 10-minute Furgon taxi ride,
and then a 5-minute walk, our efforts finally paid off,
and we could finally marvel at Kaindy Lake!

The sight of trees dramatically rising from the calm lake surface
was truly unique and amazing!
Located in a mountainous area at about 2,000m above sea level,
the air and atmosphere felt distinctly different compared to Almaty city,
and it was definitely noticeable.

Surrounded by dense forests and emerald waters,
it truly gave off a strong, mystical vibe!
With thin, tall trees standing above the water's surface,
a unique atmosphere emerged that you won't find at other lakes,
making me just stare blankly in awe 🧚🏻♂️

The color of the water changes slightly depending on your viewing angle,
and the way the trees and mountains overlap also shifts,
so I highly recommend taking your time to explore it slowly!

There's also a cafe inside the lake area, so if you have some free time,
it would be nice to take a short break! Haha.

We then took the 'Furgon' taxi back on time
to the Kaindy Lake parking lot,
and met our 'Furgon' driver who had been waiting for us.

After transferring back to the Furgon and arriving at the Azs gas station parking lot
where our rental car was parked, our sightseeing was complete! ✌🏻
Getting to Kaindy Lake was a bit of a hassle,
but the scenery we encountered firsthand was truly
one of the most memorable sights of this trip!
If you want to plan your travel itinerary conveniently,
I recommend seeing three of Kazakhstan's representative natural attractions —
Kaindy Lake, Kolsai Lake, and Charyn Canyon —
all together on a day tour!

With this introduction to the mystical Kaindy Lake,
I'll wrap up today's post 🩵
Lake Kaindy was formed after the Kemin earthquake blocked a valley. The original spruce forest that grew there was submerged, leaving the upper parts of the trees above the water's surface, creating its distinctive scenery.
A round-trip furgon ride from the Azs gas station parking lot in Saty village to the Lake Kaindy parking lot costs 20,000 to 25,000 Tenge and takes approximately 20 minutes. From the Lake Kaindy parking lot to Lake Kaindy itself, a furgon taxi costs 1,000 Tenge one-way and takes about 10 minutes.
Upon arriving at the Lake Kaindy parking lot, tourists are given approximately one and a half hours for sightseeing. From the parking lot to Lake Kaindy, you can take a furgon taxi or ride a horse.
A day tour covering Lake Kaindy, Kolsai Lakes, and Charyn Canyon can be booked for around ~$55 on Waug, and around ~$69 or ~$83 on Klook. Prices may vary depending on events and exchange rates.
The round-trip furgon cost from Saty village to the Lake Kaindy parking lot was 25,000 Tenge. The lake entrance fee was included in the furgon cost, so no separate payment was required.
