One of the places I absolutely had to visit during my trip to Almaty, Kazakhstan,
was Charyn Canyon!
The red canyon landscape,
reminiscent of the Grand Canyon in the USA, was truly magnificent!
I visited by rental car,
but I think it would be much more convenient to go as part of a tour that combines Lake Kolsai and Lake Kaindy.
So today, I'll introduce both methods! 💚

1. What Kind of Place is Charyn Canyon?

📍 Charyn Canyon
Doroga Na Charynskiy Kan'on, Kazakhstan
Charyn Canyon is one of Kazakhstan's most iconic tourist destinations,
featuring a long stretch of red and brown rock walls nestled between massive gorges.
When you stand directly amidst the canyon, you'll feel the immense scale of nature much more profoundly, so
I highly recommend it to anyone who wants to experience majestic nature!
2. How to Get to Charyn Canyon

Charyn Canyon is quite challenging to reach by public transportation,
so you can go by rental car or join a tour.
I used a rental car, but the travel distance is quite long.
That's why I'd like to recommend visiting Lake Kolsai and Lake Kaindy—which are often visited with Charyn Canyon—as a combined day tour for all three spots!
3. How to Book a Charyn Canyon Tour

Charyn Canyon and Lake Kolsai are relatively well-known,
but Lake Kaindy is really complicated to get to.
After going by rental car, you have to transfer to a Furgon twice...
You'll have to haggle on the spot, and there's a chance of getting ripped off... ^^

Therefore, if you want to see both Charyn Canyon and the two lakes,
considering the vehicle and itinerary, it would be much better to book a combined tour from the start!

4. Charyn Canyon Visit Review

As we were on our way to Kyrgyzstan,
we drove to Charyn Canyon in a rental car!
As we approached Charyn Canyon, the landscape started to change,
and the canyon began to reveal itself! My excitement was through the roof!!!
💡 Essentials to Pack
Sunscreen, sunglasses, a hat, and plenty of water!

💵 Charyn Canyon Admission Fee
3,000 Tenge per vehicle
Card payments weren't accepted,
so we paid in cash and got in!

Once you've parked and stepped inside, there's a restaurant conveniently located right by the entrance,
so you can grab a quick meal if you're feeling hungry.

It was scorching hot, so we indulged in an ice cream,
before officially venturing deeper into the canyon itself!

There are two fantastic ways to explore Charyn Canyon:
1. The upper viewpoint of Charyn Canyon (approx. 1 hour round trip)
2. Trekking through the lower gorge inside Charyn Canyon (approx. 1-2 hours round trip)
We decided to hit the upper viewpoint first,
and then dive down to walk through the lower gorge!

1. The Upper Viewpoint of Charyn Canyon (approx. 1 hour round trip)
If you follow the path along the upper rim of Charyn Canyon,
you'll reach a viewpoint where you can gaze down at the magnificent canyon from above.

As we made our way to the viewpoint, gazing down from above,
it gave us serious Grand Canyon vibes!
It's definitely a different experience from seeing it from below,
and since it's only about an hour's round trip,
I highly recommend taking the path to the viewpoint!

Once you reach the viewpoint, there's a spot where you can snap some memorable photos,
and even a Charyn Canyon sign for that perfect selfie moment!

Reaching the very end of the viewpoint, you're greeted by a wide-open space,
where you can truly soak in the grand, sweeping vistas.
I couldn't bring myself to go all the way to the edge because of my intense fear of heights,
but my wonderful husband bravely captured the video for me instead 🤣

2. Inside the Charyn Canyon Gorge (Roundtrip 1-2 hours)
We returned to the entrance and decided to trek down into the Charyn Canyon gorge.

There are 2 ways to explore the inside of the gorge:
Walking: 1 hour one-way
Furgon: 10 minutes, 1,000 Tenge per person (one-way)
The path down is a descent, and the way back is an ascent.
I highly recommend walking down for about an hour to soak in the scenery, then taking the Furgon back up!

Walking directly inside the gorge, with colossal rock walls on both sides, was incredibly enjoyable. It was perfect for a leisurely stroll downwards!

However, there isn't much shade, so if you're visiting in summer like I did, make sure to bring water and a hat to make your journey more comfortable...!!!!
Still, walking through the heart of the canyon was far more memorable than just viewing it from above 🥹

If you start seeing these dark canyons, you're almost at the end of Charyn Canyon!

At the end of Charyn Canyon, there's a Furgon stop. Since the way back is uphill and costs 1,000 Tenge per person, the Furgon line can get long, so make sure to buy your ticket first!
💡 Pro Tip
It seems the last Furgon departs around 6 PM, but when we went at about 5:50 PM, there was hardly any waiting time?!

Enjoying the scenery from the Furgon, we reached the entrance in about 10 minutes!
Charyn Canyon is truly much more magnificent in person than in photos, so I highly recommend a visit!
If it's your first time visiting Almaty or if you have a short travel itinerary, it's far more efficient to see Kazakhstan's three representative natural wonders—Charyn Canyon + Kolsai Lakes + Kaindy Lake—together on a day tour!

And with that glimpse into the stunning Charyn Canyon,
I'll wrap up today's adventure here! 💚
Charyn Canyon is not easily accessible by public transport. You can visit by renting a car or by taking a day tour. Linked tours that include Kolsai Lake and Kaindy Lake are especially recommended.
The entrance fee for Charyn Canyon is 3,000 Tenge per vehicle. Card payments are not accepted; you can only pay in cash to enter.
There are two main ways to explore Charyn Canyon: visiting the upper viewpoints or walking inside the lower canyon. Exploring the upper viewpoints takes about 1 hour round trip, while walking inside the lower canyon takes about 1-2 hours round trip.
Walking into the canyon takes about 1 hour one way (downhill), but you can come back up in just 10 minutes by using a Furgon. It's recommended to walk down and then take a Furgon up, paying 1,000 Tenge per person. The last Furgon usually departs around 6 PM.
When traveling to Kaindy Lake by rental car, you would need to transfer Furgons twice and might face difficulties with on-site negotiation. Therefore, if you wish to see both Charyn Canyon and the two lakes, it is more efficient to book a combined tour from the start, considering the vehicle routes.
