We arrived right at opening and were seated immediately without any wait.
The staff was incredibly welcoming and invited us to choose our favorite spot.
The restaurant features a cozy, home-like indoor dining room as well as a lovely outdoor terrace.
Since it felt a bit chilly outside (around 60°F), we opted for a warm and inviting table indoors.
02. What to Order: Darejani Menu Highlights & Review

We ordered three dishes: the famous Khachapuri (the legendary cheese-filled bread boat),
grilled cabbage, and a creamy roast chicken.

While waiting for our food, we explored the interior a bit more.
Behind a set of beautiful doors, there is a stunning parlor-style room perfect for group dining.

Our drinks arrived first: a glass of classic Georgian wine and some fresh orange juice.
Georgian wine is famous for a reason—if you love wine, Almaty is a fantastic place to indulge your palate!

Everything from the table accessories to the staff uniforms was beautifully coordinated and full of character.

Shortly after, our fresh, piping-hot Khachapuri was served.
You can spot a traditional clay oven near the kitchen, which explains the perfect crust on this bread.
The tableside presentation is an experience in itself.
The server carefully rubs butter over the hot crust, then mixes the melted cheese and raw egg yolk together inside the bread boat, turning it into a rich, creamy fondue-like sauce.

They slice it up and serve a piece to everyone at the table.

How does it taste?
Exactly as delicious as it looks! It is less salty than expected, featuring a mild, savory flavor and an incredibly chewy texture.
It feels less like a snack and more like a hearty, comforting bread course.
Honestly, if they offered honey on the side to drizzle over it, it would have been absolutely divine!

Next up was the grilled cabbage.
The tender, charred cabbage paired beautifully with the rich cream sauce beneath it.
A drizzle of herb-infused oil tied the whole dish together. It was easily the best thing we ate at Darejani!

Cutting into it reveals just how soft and juicy the cabbage is.
Since local Kazakh cuisine is heavily meat-focused, finding such an incredible vegetable dish felt like a breath of fresh air.
If you visit Darejani, the grilled cabbage is an absolute must-order.

Finally, we tried the creamy garlic chicken (Shkmeruli).
Perfectly roasted chicken is served swimming in a savory cream sauce, beautifully garnished with fresh cilantro and delicate flower petals.
The meat was tender and juicy, and it paired wonderfully with the grilled cabbage.

Darejani is a Georgian restaurant located near Zenkov Cathedral in Almaty. It is a 5-minute walk from the cathedral, making it a great idea to combine both places when planning an independent travel itinerary.
The opening hours are from 10:00 AM to midnight from Monday to Thursday and on Sundays, and from 10:00 AM to 1:00 AM on Fridays and Saturdays. It is open every day without any break times or regular closing days.
A staff member spreads butter on the outside of the bread baked in a fire oven, then mixes the melted cheese and egg yolk to create a cream-like texture. It tastes like a savory cheese bread meant for a meal, with a mild, non-salty flavor and a chewy texture.
We recommend the roasted cabbage, where the cream spread underneath and the oil drizzled on top pair perfectly with the moistly roasted cabbage. It is a very satisfying dish that allows you to enjoy softly cooked vegetables, especially during an Almaty trip where you tend to eat a lot of meat.
