Barobang Bakery Gangneung 2026: Your Retro Korean Bread Tour
Explore Barobang Bakery, a Gangneung institution since 1987, serving up nostalgic Korean breads in a charming retro setting. A true foodie adventure!
If you're planning a trip to Gangneung, there's one bakery you absolutely have to visit: Barobang. Maybe you've heard the name? I stumbled upon it on my way back to my accommodation one evening and decided to pop in for a quick look.
And let me tell you, the bread is simply delicious! What made it even more memorable was the incredibly kind owner, whose warmth made the experience truly special.

Getting to Barobang

Barobang is located at 14 Okgareo, Gangneung, nestled near Dongbu Market. It's an easy 10-minute walk (roughly half a mile) from Jungang Market, making it super accessible. While the original Barobang is iconic, they've expanded to four locations, including branches in Gyeongpo, Gyodong, and Jungang Market. So, you have options! If you're driving, don't worry about parking; there's a dedicated lot behind the main store.

Inside the Bakery

Step inside Barobang, and you're immediately transported back in time. The interior exudes a charming retro vibe, perfectly complemented by the array of classic, no-frills breads on display – the kind you might remember from your childhood.

You'll even spot vintage items like an old Samyang Ramen packet and a rotary dial phone. Barobang has been baking since 1987, making it a true Gangneung institution for 39 years! While I might not be old enough for dial phones, I certainly remember the days of public phone booths, dropping in small change to call home.

The atmosphere here feels just like an old-school Korean 'dabang' (coffee house) you'd see in classic movies, even if I haven't been to one myself.

They've even got sheet music, early mobile phones, VCRs, and cassette tapes – all delightful relics that might leave younger visitors scratching their heads!
Menu Highlights

When I visited, it was close to closing time, so the selection wasn't huge, but what they had was pure gold. Think classic delights like Mammoth Bread, Cream Soboro, and plain Soboro Bread. Honestly, no matter how fancy modern pastries get, nothing beats these old-school favorites.

I wanted to grab one of each: red bean bread, choux cream bread, and the old-fashioned cream bread. If only I hadn't eaten such a big dinner!
I remember my dad used to bring home Butter Coconut cookies and Soboro bread when I was a kid. Back then, I'd wonder why he bought such 'boring' treats, but now that I'm older, I totally get it.

Sadly, the Egg Bread and Conch Bread were sold out.

Only a few donuts and twisted donuts remained. While they focus on these beloved classics, they also had a surprisingly trendy 'new' item: Shanghai Butter Tteok!

But what truly caught my eye was the 'Real Old-Fashioned Hamburger.' I just *had* to buy it – I wanted to see if it was the exact same burger I used to eat at home when I was in elementary school. (For context, 'National School' was the term for elementary school in Korea when I was growing up, before it changed!)

You can also order drinks and coffee to go with your treats.

The Shanghai Butter Tteok was exactly as I remembered from other cafes: crispy on the outside, chewy and buttery on the inside – perfection! The cream bread also hit that nostalgic spot perfectly.

And the 'Real Old-Fashioned Hamburger'? Well, it truly *was* a real old-fashioned hamburger, complete with a single patty and a simple salad filling. You'd be hard-pressed to find a burger like this anywhere these days! While the three breads I bought weren't 'exceptionally gourmet' by modern standards, they evoked such strong childhood memories that I felt a profound sense of gratitude.
So, there you have it: Barobang, a highly recommended stop on your Gangneung food tour. While the Jungang Market branch or other locations might offer easier access, the prices and flavors are consistent across all stores, so pick the one closest to you. I have a feeling anyone, especially those of us around 40 or older, will absolutely adore this place!
