When you're searching for an authentic taste of Yeosu, look no further than Sanga Sikdang, a beloved local spot specializing in hearty whole eel soup. I had the pleasure of visiting this culinary gem with a local friend, and I'm excited to share why it's the perfect fortifying meal, especially as the seasons change.

I used to frequent Jamae Sikdang, which is right next door to Sanga Sikdang. As you can see on the map, Jamae Sikdang, Sanga Sikdang, Jamsugi Jang-eo Sikdang, and Yongjin Sikdang are all clustered together, specializing in whole eel soup. My friend, who runs a business in Yeosu, often dines at Sanga Sikdang, so we decided to give it a try together.

The restaurant is located right in front of a bustling fish market and pier, so you're immediately enveloped by the fresh scent of the sea. It's also a well-known spot for those playing golf at the nearby Gyeongdo CC.
Menu

The menu features three delicious eel dishes:
Whole Eel Soup (Tong Jang-eo Tang): ~$11
Spicy Grilled Eel (Jang-eo Yangnyeom Gui): ~$17
Salt-Grilled Eel (Jang-eo Sogeum Gui): ~$17
Interior

The interior has a charmingly traditional, 'old-school' feel. It's unpretentious and comfortable, perfect for a casual yet authentic dining experience.
Side Dishes

Along with the main dishes, we were served a delightful array of banchan (side dishes), including a special dipping sauce and even some chewy tteok (rice cakes).

The spread included acorn jelly (dotorimuk), seasoned anchovies, kkakdugi (diced radish kimchi), fragrant gat-kimchi (mustard leaf kimchi), bean sprouts, fresh ginger and garlic slices, doenjang (fermented soybean paste), and a unique sea squirt jeotgal (fermented seafood paste). Each side dish added another layer of flavor to the meal.
Salt-Grilled Eel

While many places allow you to grill the eel at your table, here, the Salt-Grilled Eel arrived perfectly cooked and ready to eat. This made for a relaxed dining experience, allowing us to savor every bite without the hassle of grilling.

The eel had a fantastic texture—crispy on the outside, yet tender and juicy on the inside. It was even more perfectly cooked than what I usually achieve at a tabletop grill.
Whole Eel Soup

Next up was the star of the show: Yeosu's regional specialty, the Whole Eel Soup (Tong Jang-eo Tang), served bubbling hot in a large earthenware pot. Yeosu has historically been abundant in various types of eel, including freshwater eel and conger eel (bungeo-jang-eo).
This particular soup, Tong Jang-eo Tang, is made by simmering a whole conger eel. The name 'Tong Jang-eo' literally means 'whole eel,' reflecting how the eel is prepared and cooked in its entirety.

Can you see the thick, succulent eel meat in the soup?

Unlike some eel soups where the eel is ground up, Tong Jang-eo Tang features a substantial whole eel, allowing you to flake off generous portions of meat. Just one bowl of this soup is incredibly filling and satisfying.

The portion was so generous that I actually had to leave a little bit of the broth behind. I was completely full!

Eel is renowned in Korean culture for its revitalizing properties, which likely explains why many older patrons frequent this establishment. Even though we arrived a bit before lunchtime, the restaurant quickly filled up as noon approached.
Sanga Sikdang and Jamae Sikdang are the two reigning champions of whole eel soup in the Eohangdanji district of Yeosu's Gukdong Port. While I typically visited Jamae Sikdang, my local Yeosu friend convinced me to try Sanga Sikdang, and I was not disappointed.
Deciding which one is 'better' really comes down to personal taste—I genuinely enjoyed both! If you're traveling to Yeosu and wondering what to eat, I highly recommend indulging in the fresh, invigorating flavors of whole eel soup. Located right by the sea, it's a unique and incredibly hearty meal, especially perfect for boosting your energy during any season. It's truly a distinctive and satisfying experience!
Sang-a Restaurant operates daily from 7 AM to 8 PM. You can visit from early morning until evening to enjoy their Whole Eel Soup (Tongjangeo-tang) or grilled eel.
Sang-a Restaurant's Whole Eel Soup (Tongjangeo-tang) is ~$11. Grilled Salted Eel and Grilled Seasoned Eel are both sold for ~$17 each.
Tongjangeo-tang is a soup made by boiling an entire conger eel. The name 'Tongjangeo' originates from the meaning of cooking the eel whole.
