Yongwolsa Temple Location Our Yongwolsa Temple Experience |
1. Yongwolsa Temple Location
Yeosu Dolsando Island
Yongwolsa Temple, a serene spot worth visiting in Yeosu, is nestled on the easternmost tip of Dolsando Island (돌산도) in Yeosu.
The temple itself is quite close to the parking area, but the drive up to Yongwolsa can be a bit challenging for novice drivers. The road winds steeply up the mountainside, and we were extra cautious navigating the curves, especially as dusk approached.
Before reaching the official temple entrance, you'll find an open lot that serves as the main parking area.

We had no trouble finding a spot here. Compared to the more famous Hyangilam Temple (향일암) in Yeosu, Yongwolsa is less known, so parking was a breeze.

While it seems vehicles might typically be able to drive further into the temple grounds, the path was blocked, likely due to ongoing construction.

2. Our Yongwolsa Temple Experience
A Buddha Statue Against the Ocean Backdrop
Our main reason for choosing Yongwolsa Temple was its accessibility. My Mexican parents, who are in their 70s, needed a temple where the walk from the parking lot wasn't too long. Yongwolsa fit the bill perfectly with a manageable distance of about 300 meters (~0.18 miles).
We arrived without major expectations, as Yongwolsa isn't as widely known. However, we were incredibly impressed by the Buddha statue facing the majestic Yeosu ocean. It's a truly unique and memorable sight!

Unlike many temples perched deep in the mountains, Yongwolsa offers an incredible sense of openness with panoramic views of the sea. This expansive vista made our visit even more special.

The Buddha statue my parents were keen to see is centrally located, offering a peaceful presence against the vast ocean.

As my family loves the ocean, Yongwolsa Temple felt incredibly special to us, distinct from other temples we've visited.

While we couldn't enter the main hall directly facing the sea, we were able to peek inside and appreciate its interior.

Because it's not widely advertised, Yongwolsa Temple allowed for a quiet and calm temple visit, making it one of Yeosu's hidden gems. The temple faces east, so we missed the sunset from within the grounds, but we were treated to a beautiful sunset view on the opposite side as we departed.

If you're looking to explore a temple quietly, away from the crowds, consider visiting Yongwolsa Temple instead of the more famous Hyangilam Temple (향일암) in Yeosu. It's truly a peaceful retreat.
