🐢 What Makes the Yakushima Sea Turtle Spawning Tour So Special?
The Yakushima Sea Turtle Spawning Observation Tour is a seasonal night tour that only runs from May through July.
Yakushima is one of the world's rare natural nesting grounds for wild sea turtles, offering a unique opportunity to witness these magnificent creatures lay their eggs in their natural habitat.
However, since the sea turtle nesting season is limited to May-July, it's difficult to observe them if you don't time your visit right. This makes the tour an especially exclusive experience during your Yakushima trip.
Fortunately, we planned our Yakushima trekking adventure to coincide with the sea turtle spawning season, allowing us to participate in this highly sought-after tour.

03. Yakushima Sea Turtle Spawning Tour Review
Upon arriving at Nagata Inakahama Beach (永田いなか浜), you'll see a turtle nesting sign like the one below.

We followed the parking attendants' directions. The parking area was spacious, and since the tour is limited to 50 participants, it wasn't crowded, making parking easy and convenient.
After entering, our reservation name was checked, we paid ~$19 USD per person in cash, received numbered lanyards, and took our seats.

During the approximately 15-minute orientation, we learned about Yakushima and sea turtles, along with important guidelines and precautions.

They even let us take photos with a turtle model, and knowing we were foreigners, they seated us in the very front row where the English subtitles on the video were clearly visible.

There was also a spot in the brochure to collect a stamp, which was a lovely way to create a souvenir!
04. Yakushima Sea Turtle Spawning Observation Experience
As phones and lights are prohibited, please understand that this review is purely descriptive.
On the night we visited, the sea turtles didn't come ashore immediately, so we waited quite a long time before receiving a radio call and heading down to the beach.
Yakushima is an island registered as a UNESCO World Natural Heritage site, and no artificial lights are used to protect the nesting sea turtles, making the beach incredibly dark.
To observe the wild sea turtles, we couldn't speak loudly or use any artificial lights. Experiencing the quiet sound of the waves with only the moon and stars visible was unfamiliar but became one of our most unforgettable memories.
After waiting for several hours, some people lay down on the beach. My friend did, so I followed suit, and lying quietly on the night beach was quite a pleasant experience.

Eventually, we heard that a turtle had come ashore, and we all moved to observe. While we didn't see the exact moment of egg-laying as in photos, it was incredible to see a wild sea turtle up close for the first time. The guide explained everything in great detail, even jokingly remarking that this particular turtle seemed a bit 'inexperienced' – good thing the turtle didn't understand Japanese!
Hearing the explanation that sea turtles carry their incredibly heavy shells, dig with their entire bodies to lay eggs, and then return to the sea made us feel immense wonder and mystery for life.
It's fascinating that baby turtles, once hatched, use the moonlight to guide them to the ocean – it's truly ingrained in their DNA. Though I must admit, the guide kept shining a flashlight on the turtle's rear end when it moved, and I imagine if I were the turtle, I might have felt a bit embarrassed! Anyway, the tour concluded around 11:00 PM after observing the sea turtle.
If you're visiting Yakushima during the nesting season, I highly recommend enjoying the island's daytime with some trekking and then capping off your day with the sea turtle spawning tour at night!
