02. Our Review of Kagoshima Yakiniku Horumon in Yakushima
✅ Kagoshima Yakiniku Horumon Recommended Menu Items
Deer Meat
Wild Boar Meat
Beef Tongue
⭐ Jyo Karubi (Premium Short Rib)
⭐ Pa-bap (Rice with Leeks)
Knowing these unique meats are hard to find elsewhere, we definitely ordered deer meat and wild boar meat. We also added the highly recommended Pa-bap.
The menu was super easy to navigate, with pictures and English descriptions alongside the Japanese. Interestingly, they offer quite a few Korean dishes, including Makgeolli, Korean-style Galbi, Jeon (Korean pancake), Kimchi, and Bibimbap.
If you're craving Korean food in Yakushima, this is definitely a place to consider!
We ordered beer, a sour cocktail (sawa), and oolong tea. The oolong tea came in a mug the size of a human head, which was hilarious!
If you're parched after a day of hiking, that oolong tea will be pure bliss.
Unfortunately, beef tongue was in high demand, so they limited it to one plate per table.
And now, for the star of the show: the deer meat. It had a deep red color with hardly any visible fat.
The Jyo Karubi (Premium Short Rib), known for being more tender and marbled than regular short rib, arrived quickly as well.
Wanting to start with something melt-in-your-mouth, we grilled the Jyo Karubi first, then immediately added the deer meat.
The Jyo Karubi was exactly as expected: incredibly tender and delicious. We ordered a second plate almost instantly!
As for the deer meat, we were pleasantly surprised. It had absolutely no gamey smell and was incredibly lean and clean-tasting. With less fat than beef, it offered a pure flavor, and while it was as lean as chicken breast, its texture was much chewier and more satisfying. It's definitely a must-try experience when you're in Yakushima.
Next up was the beef tongue.
This cut is always a winner, and even though it was sliced quite thin, it melted in your mouth and was perfect with rice.
But honestly, the most surprisingly delicious item was the Pa-bap (rice with leeks).
The Pa-bap had a subtle sesame oil aroma, topped with chopped scallions and fermented clam paste. Eating it with the grilled meat helped cut through any richness, allowing us to enjoy everything to the very last bite. You can choose from two sizes:
- Large size: ~$3 (about 1.5 bowls of rice)
- Small size: ~$2 (about 1 bowl of rice)
I ordered the small size, and it was the perfect amount to enjoy with the meat.
Seriously, the Pa-bap was so memorable that I highly recommend you order it with your yakiniku.
The three of us had a fantastic and filling meal!
💴 Average Meal Cost
- Per person: ~$16 - ~$22
- Total bill for 3 people: ~$55
- Cash only, no card payments accepted
Considering Yakushima's overall prices, a meal for three totaling around ~$55 was quite reasonable.
If you're planning dinner after a trek in Yakushima, we highly recommend this accessible yakiniku restaurant near Miyanoura Port.
