Yakushima Accommodation: Minshuku Iwakawa
A Budget-Friendly Stay Near Miyanoura Port
ⓒeodigayeong
Here is my review of the new building at
Minshuku Iwakawa (民宿いわかわ),
a cozy and budget-friendly place to stay near Miyanoura Port!
Since Yakushima is an island where public transportation can be quite tricky,
your choice of accommodation can completely change your travel experience.
So, I’ve put together everything you need to know, from
location tips and facilities to bento reservations!
In this post, I will cover:
✔️ Recommended Areas to Stay in Yakushima
✔️ Minshuku Iwakawa Facilities & Rooms
✔️ How to Order Bento Boxes at Minshuku Iwakawa
✔️ Minshuku Iwakawa Check-in & Check-out
✔️ Yakushima Bus Timetable Tips
I've got it all mapped out for you!
01. Recommended Stay Locations in Yakushima
📍 Minshuku Iwakawa
📍 Minshuku Iwakawa
203-7 Miyanoura, Yakushima, Kumage District, Kagoshima 891-4205 Japan
Yakushima doesn't have many taxis,
and buses only run about once an hour,
meaning public transit is quite limited.
On top of that, the main sights (like Shiratani Unsuikyo and Jomonsugi)
are far apart, so your base camp's location is super important.
When looking for a place to stay in Yakushima,
most travelers choose between the island's main ports:
Miyanoura Port or Anbo Port.
That's why we decided to base ourselves
right near Miyanoura Port.
✅ Pros of Each Location in Yakushima
- Miyanoura Port: More frequent ferry options
- Anbo Port: More restaurants and cafes nearby

When we were searching for our
Yakushima accommodation, we had three simple criteria:
✅ Our Accommodation Criteria
- Within walking distance of Miyanoura Port
- Near a bus stop (for easy trekking access)
- Affordable rates + clean, modern facilities
Out of all the options, the cleanest-looking place
that checked every single box was
Minshuku Iwakawa.
The price was an absolute steal: a total of ~$218
for 3 people for 3 nights (4 days).
That's about ~$70 per person, working out to
around ~$19 a night! Talk about incredible value.

After comparing a few different platforms,
Agoda definitely had the best deal,
so that’s where we made our booking.
02. Minshuku Iwakawa Facilities: Room Tour
Minshuku Iwakawa is divided into the New Building and the Main Building.
After looking at reviews, the New Building seemed much cleaner,
so we made sure to book our stay there.

It's located just a 5-minute walk
from the check-in counter at つり具の岩川 (a fishing gear shop),
and the friendly owner kindly showed us the way.

One minor downside is that there is no elevator,
so lugging your bags up during check-in and check-out can be a bit of a workout.

We got assigned the very last room on the second floor.
Since we had windows on both walls, the room was beautifully lit with natural light!
As for the room size, even with three of us laying out our futons
and opening up all our suitcases, it didn't feel cramped at all.

The interior of the room looked exactly like the photos on the booking page,
and the air conditioning worked perfectly, allowing us to get a comfortable night's sleep.
03. Minshuku Iwakawa Facilities: Bathrooms & Sinks
The shared bathroom area has separate sinks and shower rooms,
with two sinks and two shower rooms on each floor.

Each shower room is designed with a private changing area in the front
and a shower cubicle further inside.
They provide shampoo, conditioner, and body wash inside,
so you really only need to bring your personal skincare items.

The toilets are also separate from the shower rooms,
and the double-door setup does a great job blocking out any noise.

My absolute favorite detail was the towels—
they are organized by face and body sizes,
and you can use them with no limit on the quantity.
Even though it was peak season and the place was fully booked,
the bathrooms were always kept dry and spotless.
It was incredibly pleasant to use them every single time.
04. Minshuku Iwakawa Facilities: Laundry Room

After a long day of trekking in Yakushima, the last thing you want
is to pack sweaty clothes straight into your suitcase.
Having a dedicated laundry room on-site
meant we could wash everything immediately after our hike, which was amazing.

Equipped with 3 washing machines and 2 dryers
(which can even dry shoes!), it was super convenient.
Laundry detergent is also provided,
so you don't have to worry about packing your own.
Even with a full house, there was always an open washer,
so we never had to wait to do our laundry.
05. Minshuku Iwakawa Facilities: Shared Kitchen

The shared kitchen is fully stocked with essentials like
cooking utensils, an oven, a rice cooker, a microwave, and a refrigerator.
Since it's a shared space, you just write your name
on a sticky note before putting your food in the fridge.
Once you're done eating,
you can clean up and toss your trash in the bins provided in the kitchen.
06. Booking Bento Boxes at Minshuku Iwakawa
When you visit Yakushima,
hiking the Shiratani Unsuikyo and Jomon Sugi trails is practically a given.
Because both of these trekking courses
start in the early hours of the morning,
almost no restaurants or shops are open at that time.
To help with this, the guesthouse takes bento lunchbox orders in advance
and has them delivered directly to the property.
🍱 Bento Prices, Ordering, and Pick-up
- Bento Prices
Single-tier Bento: 850 yen
Double-tier Bento: 950 yen
- How to Order: Reserve your bento at the front desk
- Ordering Deadline: By 6:00 PM the day before your trek
- Delivery: Delivered to the bento drop-box by the guesthouse entrance on the morning of your trek

When we checked in, we ordered:
✔️ Shiratani Unsuikyo Trek: Single-tier bento
✔️ Jomon Sugi Trek: Single-tier bento + Double-tier bento
We ordered three bento boxes per person and paid in cash.

The single-tier bento comes with two rice balls and
장아찌, 튀김, 삶은계란, 비엔나 소시지의 구성으로
하나만 먹어도 굉장히 배불렀다.
