Intrigued by the idea of trying a whole deep-fried flying fish, I made my way to a highly recommended local spot.

01. Ebisu Daikoku Toshi: Cozy Atmosphere, Menu, and Hours

Stepping inside, the restaurant offers a cozy mix of traditional floor seating (tatami) and counter bar seats.
We were happily guided to one of the comfortable tatami tables.
Watching the locals sit at the bar, chatting warmly with the owners, gave the entire place a wonderful, welcoming neighborhood izakaya vibe.

Ordering was a breeze as they kindly provided a comprehensive English menu.
To get a taste of everything, we ordered the Deep-Fried Flying Fish Set Meal, Yakitori Skewers Set, Fresh Sashimi Set, and Agedashi Tofu.
For drinks, we opted for Calpis, Oolong Tea, and a refreshing Lemon Chu-hi.
⏰ Operating Hours
17:30 - 21:00
Closed: Mondays and Sundays
Break Time: None
Since they open daily at 5:30 PM,
we planned our first evening on the island around this dinner.
Because their evening hours are relatively short,
we highly recommend heading over early to secure a table after your daytime hikes!
02. Honest Food Review & Must-Order Recommendations

Cheers to an incredible trip to Yakushima!
For the table, they served a delightful selection of complimentary starters (otoshi),
including edamame, simmered taro with fish cake, and local pickles.

The food arrived surprisingly quickly, starting with the star of the evening: the whole deep-fried flying fish.
Wow!
😮
While we were incredibly excited to try it,
seeing it presented whole with its wings intact was definitely a dramatic, slightly wild visual!

This was easily the most memorable photo of our trip.

Despite the dramatic look, the taste was surprisingly approachable and delicious.
The meat had a clean, mild flavor, tasting like a cross between croaker and mackerel.
Pro tip: The crispy skin can have a slightly stronger, fishier flavor, so we preferred sticking to the tender white flesh inside.

Next up were the yakitori and sashimi plates.
Both are classic Japanese favorites that never disappoint.
The sashimi was outstanding—thickly sliced, incredibly fresh, and melt-in-your-mouth tender.

The complete spread was beautifully presented, clean, and incredibly satisfying.
The Agedashi Tofu was a standout. The light potato starch coating gave it a wonderfully chewy exterior while keeping the silken tofu inside incredibly soft, all served in a savory dashi-soy broth.
The accompanying miso soup had a uniquely thick, hearty texture. My friend explained that this is due to the addition of local nameko mushrooms, which give the broth its rich consistency.
Our Top Recommendations:
For the ultimate local culinary experience, order the iconic deep-fried flying fish,
along with the agedashi tofu and a plate of fresh sashimi.
Make sure to add this cozy spot near Miyanoura Port to your Yakushima itinerary!
