Hey there, fellow travelers! Lisa here, your go-to travel blogger!
In this post, I'm thrilled to share all about the incredible Waitomo Caves tour, a must-visit highlight located near Auckland during your self-guided adventure through New Zealand's North Island!
The Waitomo Caves are world-famous for their enchanting glowworms, which illuminate the cave ceilings like a starry night sky.
You can experience this magical phenomenon in two main ways:
First, there's the serene 'Glowworm Grotto Boat Tour', where you glide silently through the cave in a boat, gazing up at the twinkling lights.
Alternatively, for the more adventurous, there's 'Blackwater Rafting', an active tour where you float on an inner tube, abseil down caverns, and explore the underground rivers.
I've actually had the amazing opportunity to experience both tours firsthand!
✅ I'll cover the differences, pros, and cons of the Boat Tour versus Blackwater Rafting.
✅ Plus, I’ll share essential booking tips and a comparison of various booking sites.
✅ And of course, my honest, real-time reviews from my visits.
If you're planning a trip to New Zealand, the Waitomo Caves are an iconic attraction you absolutely shouldn't miss. Keep reading for all the details!

📍Address: 39 Waitomo Village Road, Waitomo Caves 3977, New Zealand
The Waitomo Caves are one of the most popular destinations for a day trip from Auckland.
It’s about a 3-hour drive from Auckland, so you can either rent a car and drive yourself, or opt for a convenient Waitomo Caves + Hobbiton day tour.
⭐️ For Hobbiton tours, while official websites and other platforms offer foreign guides, I recommend tours that provide a guide in your preferred language for the best experience.💗

1️⃣ Glowworm Grotto Boat Tour
A serene and atmospheric tour where you take a small boat inside the Waitomo Caves to quietly admire the glowing worms on the ceiling.

A concept shot from our Blackwater Rafting experience. The staff often help guests pose for unique photos!😁
2️⃣ Blackwater Rafting
An activity-packed tour where you wear a wetsuit, float through the cave on an inner tube, and abseil down ropes into the underground river system.
Duration: 3 hours

3. How to Book Your Waitomo Caves Tour
The Waitomo Caves are a popular attraction where you cannot visit without a reservation.
Therefore, advance booking is essential before your visit.
Especially for popular morning and lunchtime slots, tickets can sell out quickly, even a month in advance, so I highly recommend booking as soon as your travel dates are firm.
I learned this the hard way when I tried to book just three weeks out and couldn't get my preferred time, ending up with a 5 PM slot. So, once your itinerary is set, book your tour well in advance!🥲
You can book directly through the official website, but often, using a platform can get you a much better deal.
If you're looking to book the Boat Tour ➙ Trip.com
If you're looking to book Blackwater Rafting ➙ KKday
These are my top recommendations.
4. My Waitomo Caves Visit Review
I've actually experienced both types of tours!
I tried Blackwater Rafting with my husband on a previous trip to New Zealand. This time, I was traveling with my parents, so the active rafting seemed a bit too much for them. Instead, we opted for the Boat Tour.
Here's my conclusion:
If you love active adventures and getting a little wet?!
I wholeheartedly recommend Blackwater Rafting.
But if you prefer to stay dry, or are traveling with children or seniors (50+ years old)?!
The Boat Tour is definitely the way to go.
Most importantly, both tours offer truly astonishing sights!
While photography isn't allowed inside the caves, which is a bit of a shame, witnessing the glowworms cover the ceiling above you, sparkling like a galaxy, is an indescribably moving experience.
Still, personally, Blackwater Rafting was much more fun and a more memorable tour for me.
