Both tours require advance booking. On-site tickets often sell out quickly, and during peak season, spots can be fully booked up to a month in advance, so it's absolutely crucial to book ahead!

The Waitomo Caves are a popular attraction where you cannot visit without a reservation.
Therefore, advance booking is essential before your visit.
Especially for popular morning and lunchtime slots, tickets can sell out quickly, even a month in advance, so I highly recommend booking as soon as your travel dates are firm.
I learned this the hard way when I tried to book just three weeks out and couldn't get my preferred time, ending up with a 5 PM slot. So, once your itinerary is set, book your tour well in advance!🥲

4. My Waitomo Caves Visit Review
I've actually experienced both types of tours!
I tried Blackwater Rafting with my husband on a previous trip to New Zealand. This time, I was traveling with my parents, so the active rafting seemed a bit too much for them. Instead, we opted for the Boat Tour.
Here's my conclusion:
If you love active adventures and getting a little wet?!
I wholeheartedly recommend Blackwater Rafting.
But if you prefer to stay dry, or are traveling with children or seniors (50+ years old)?!
The Boat Tour is definitely the way to go.
Most importantly, both tours offer truly astonishing sights!
While photography isn't allowed inside the caves, which is a bit of a shame, witnessing the glowworms cover the ceiling above you, sparkling like a galaxy, is an indescribably moving experience.
Still, personally, Blackwater Rafting was much more fun and a more memorable tour for me.

It would be a shame to visit the Waitomo Glowworm Caves from Auckland and head straight back without exploring more of the North Island.
