1. Vietnam Cities at a Glance

City | Keywords | Recommended For |
Ho Chi Minh City | Food, City Vibes | Food lovers & foodies |
Nha Trang | Relaxation, Beaches | Resort lovers seeking a staycation |
Da Nang | Sightseeing, Attractions | First-time visitors to Vietnam |
Phu Quoc | Trendy, Aesthetic | Instagrammers & photo lovers |

✔️ If it's your first time in Vietnam, Da Nang is the safest bet.
With iconic landmarks like Ba Na Hills and the UNESCO World Heritage site of Hoi An, there's no shortage of unique sights.

✔️ If you're looking to relax, head to Nha Trang or Phu Quoc.
They are packed with affordable 5-star resorts, island-hopping tours, and beautiful spots for ocean swimming.

✔️ If your main goal is eating, Ho Chi Minh City is all you need.
While places like Nha Trang, Da Nang, and Phu Quoc are filled with heavily advertised tourist spots,
Ho Chi Minh City is a massive metropolis packed with authentic, local eateries.
Personally, as a huge foodie,
my personal favorites rank as: Ho Chi Minh City >>> Nha Trang > Da Nang > Phu Quoc.
2. For the Ultimate Foodie: Ho Chi Minh City

While Ho Chi Minh City doesn't have a beach,
it easily boasts the best and most diverse local food scene in Vietnam.
✅ Vibe - A bustling metropolis where skyscrapers meet endless waves of motorbikes
✅ Best for - Local eateries, night markets, rooftop bars, and shopping
✅ Cons - No beaches, so swimming in the ocean is off the table.

From Pho Quynh's noodle soup to Com Tam Bui Saigon (broken rice) and Banh Mi Huynh Hoa...
Amazing local eats are hidden around every corner.
Honestly, I believe the local food in Ho Chi Minh City
is the most authentic representation of Vietnamese cuisine.
Other touristy cities tend to tone down the herbs and spices for tourists,
* though that does make them easier for pickier eaters to enjoy!

But if you're like me and love fresh cilantro and bold, authentic spices,
you will absolutely fall in love with the food here! :)
🚨 Quick Survival Tip! |
Ho Chi Minh City is absolutely packed with motorbikes. When crossing the street, don't run! Just walk slowly at a steady, predictable pace, and the riders will naturally navigate around you. |

3. If Relaxation is Your Goal, Head to Nha Trang

Nha Trang is a city where you can truly unwind, thanks to its abundance of budget-friendly luxury resorts.
It's the perfect destination to just sit back and relax.
For just ~$64 to ~$128,
you can enjoy a luxury staycation at a 5-star resort.
So if you're looking to recharge,
or planning a family trip with your parents, this is the city I highly recommend.

✅ Vibe - A classic resort destination with endless stretches of beaches lined with beautiful resorts
✅ Pros - Ocean swimming, island hopping tours, VinWonders amusement park, and incredible seafood spots
✅ Cons - Fewer sightseeing options in the city center; the water isn't quite as crystal-clear as places like Cebu.
With a long dry season running from January to August,
it's a massive plus that you're almost guaranteed great weather for water activities!
I've personally visited Nha Trang twice,
and the weather was absolutely gorgeous both times.
In fact, I've already booked another trip to Nha Trang for my next family getaway with my parents!
🚨 Pro Travel Hack! |
The distance between the resort areas and the city center is quite far. I recommend splitting your stay—like 1 night in the city and 2 nights at a resort— or making good use of the free shuttle buses that many resorts offer to and from the city center. |

4. If You Love Sightseeing, Danang is the One

Danang offers the most diverse sightseeing options among Vietnamese cities,
making it the most popular choice for first-time travelers to Vietnam.

✅ Vibe - The perfect all-rounder where you can enjoy the beach, city life, and nearby historic towns all in one trip
✅ Pros - Ba Na Hills Golden Bridge, My Khe Beach, and Hoi An Ancient Town
✅ Cons - The midday heat in the summer can be intense. On the flip side, it can actually get a bit chilly around January and February.

The UNESCO World Heritage site, Hoi An Ancient Town,
is just a 40-minute drive away, making it perfect for a day trip.
I've been to Danang during both the dry and wet seasons,
and I highly recommend visiting during the dry season to fully enjoy all the outdoor attractions.
🚨 Pro Travel Hack! |
Plan your itinerary like this to beat the heat: Sightseeing in the morning, relaxing by the pool in the afternoon, and exploring the night markets in the evening. Danang also has the largest number of Korean restaurants in Vietnam. If you ever need a break from local food, treating yourself to some K-food is a fantastic backup plan! |

5. For the Newest, Most Aesthetic Spot: Phu Quoc

Phu Quoc is an island that has undergone incredibly rapid development over the last few years.
The moment you arrive, you'll immediately get the vibe of a meticulously planned resort town.
While it might feel a bit less 'traditionally Vietnamese,'
its clean, colorful European-style buildings make it an incredibly photogenic destination.
The island is divided into the North, Central, and South regions,
each offering completely different vibes, allowing you to tailor your trip exactly how you like.

✅ Vibe - A trendy, up-and-coming destination constantly popping up with brand-new luxury resorts and aesthetic photo spots
✅ Pros - Sunset Town (perfect for photos), Vinpearl Safari (the largest safari in Southeast Asia), and incredible value-for-money resorts
✅ Cons - The rainy season runs from May to October, so the weather can be a bit unpredictable.
Some areas are still being developed, so you might run into active construction sites here and there.
Since most facilities are brand new, you get incredible bang for your buck when it comes to accommodations.
During the rainy season, resort prices drop significantly,
making 5-star properties incredibly budget-friendly!
If you look around, you can even find options under ~$64 per night.

⚠️ Travel Advisory
Phu Quoc is quite a large island, so travel times between attractions can be longer than you think.
I highly recommend checking the location of your resort before booking!
Personally, I suggest staying in the central Sonasea area.
