Buses offer many direct routes and can get you there in about 5 hours, but you'll be sitting in one spot the whole time.

Trains, on the other hand, boast spacious seats and the freedom to move around during your journey.

1. How to Get from Vienna to Ljubljana

In Europe, the earlier you book bus and train tickets, the cheaper they tend to be. Checking prices for late September, the lowest bus fare was 31.5 Euros, and the lowest train fare was 29 Euros, showing not much difference in price.

However, unlike train stations which are usually centrally located, the **bus terminal is a bit on the outskirts** of the city.

We took a 6 AM bus from Vienna to Ljubljana, and to make sure we weren't late, we stayed at an **Ibis hotel near the bus terminal** on our last night in Vienna.

It was an easy 8-minute walk to the terminal, and the sidewalk was wide and flat, so even with a large suitcase, we had no trouble at all.

Trains from Vienna to Ljubljana can be booked on the **official website of ÖBB**, the Austrian national railway.

Simply enter 'Wien Hbf' for the departure station, 'Ljubljana' for the arrival station, then select your date and number of passengers.

It's important to check the search results for whether it's a direct route, the number of transfers, and the total travel time.

While booking on the official ÖBB website might be slightly cheaper, if you're not comfortable with foreign language websites or international payments, another option is to use **MyRealTrip**.

3. How to Book a Bus

Just like with trains, you enter your departure, arrival, travel date, and number of passengers, then hit the search button.

The departure/arrival times and estimated travel duration are displayed.

However, for buses, the travel time can be extended depending on traffic conditions.

Most are direct buses, so you don't need to get off and transfer, but they often stop at other intermediate stops to pick up more passengers, making it hard to depart earlier even if you arrive a bit ahead of schedule, so arriving much earlier than the estimated time is unlikely.

On the payment page, you enter your name and select your seat. For our bus from Vienna to Ljubljana, we couldn't select seats when booking, and it seems we either received an email to assign seats closer to the departure date or they were randomly assigned.

One checked suitcase for the luggage compartment is typically included with your bus ticket, but if you have more than one piece of luggage to store underneath, you'll need to pay an additional baggage fee.

Once your booking is complete, an e-ticket with a QR code will be issued, so there's no need to print it separately.

We booked a bus departing at 6:05 AM for 36.5 Euros per person.

4. Bus Ride Review

We checked out of the Ibis Budget Hotel where we were staying early in the morning and headed to the Vienna Bus Terminal.

The exact address was on our voucher, so after inputting it and following the directions, we found a building with a FlixBus sign.

It was so early that the building with the ticket office hadn't opened yet, but quite a few people, besides us, were already waiting at the terminal for their respective buses.

The departure board displayed bus arrival information, and we were waiting after finding our boarding gate.

If you're ever anxious about where your bus is due to a delay, you can click the Track your trip link at the bottom left of your e-ticket, and you'll be able to see in real-time where your bus is and its estimated arrival time.

There were fewer people than we expected, so one person could comfortably use two seats.

My husband and I each took two seats, placing our bags with valuables on the window seats, and I sat on the aisle side and slept.

By Korean standards, a 5-hour journey is certainly not short, but here in Europe, it's not considered all that long! And perhaps because I had the luxury of two seats to myself, I didn't feel particularly tired.

Our scheduled arrival was 11:15 AM, and thankfully, there was hardly any delay – just a mere 5-10 minutes!

Ljubljana is such a charming and captivating city, and what's even better, prices are relatively more affordable compared to other European destinations! So, if your itinerary allows for some flexibility, I highly recommend staying for 1-2 nights, making sure to include a visit to breathtaking Lake Bled!
