How to Get to Ljubljana Castle and Parking Information
📍 Ljubljana Castle
Grajska planota 1, 1000 Ljubljana, Slovenia
Ljubljana Castle is located right in the heart of the city, making it a great spot to visit along with other nearby attractions.
It's about a 10 to 15-minute walk to Parliament Square or Dragon Bridge. However, since it's located on quite a hill, I recommend using a rental car or public transport rather than walking.

I visited Ljubljana briefly on my way from Maribor to Bled, so I came by rental car.
Ljubljana Castle has its own parking lot, and parking for under 2 hours is relatively inexpensive.
It's 2 Euros per hour for up to 2 hours, and 2.5 Euros per hour for over 2 hours, so I recommend aiming for a visit of about 2 hours if possible.
The parking lot was quite spacious with plenty of spots, making it very convenient to use.

When you enter the parking lot, you take a ticket, and then you pay at a kiosk before exiting.
If you lose your parking ticket, the fees can be quite expensive, so make sure to keep it safe!
I didn't have much time, so I quickly explored for about an hour. Parking fees can be paid by card, so I was able to pay with my travel wallet.

If you're using public transport, most people take the funicular. There are also ticket options that include the funicular, so it's a good idea to check those before you go.
Additionally, there's an electric train that circles Ljubljana city center. It connects major attractions and includes an audio guide
Think of it like a handy tour bus experience.
If you're exploring multiple sights in Ljubljana,
definitely give the Urban Electric Train a look!

1. Ticket Prices and Free-Access Areas

Ljubljana Castle boasts a variety of cultural facilities within its walls,
leading to a rather diverse range of ticket options.
But here's a secret: there are some wonderful areas you can explore completely free of charge,
so you don't necessarily have to buy an admission ticket.

The castle's interior is surprisingly vast,
and with cafes, wine bars, and restaurants nestled within,
you can freely wander through the castle courtyard and several other fascinating spaces without opening your wallet!

However, if you're eager to delve into the main attractions – think captivating exhibition halls, breathtaking observation tower views,
the immersive Virtual Castle, and even a funicular ride –
then grabbing an admission ticket beforehand is definitely the way to go!
And if you're bringing the little explorers along,
tickets for the Medieval Experience,
or the Castle Escape game sound like an absolute blast!

You can easily grab your tickets right at the castle's main gate
via a convenient kiosk.
But here's a pro tip: booking through Trip.com often lets you use coupons,
making it a more budget-friendly option than buying at the gate!
Since I was a bit short on time, I couldn't dive into the exhibitions.
Instead, I focused on exploring the fantastic free-access areas.
And let me tell you, just wandering through the courtyard, along the castle walls, and enjoying the viewpoint offered an abundance of stunning photo opportunities – I was absolutely delighted!
However, if you're dreaming of panoramic city views from the observation tower
or craving a deep dive into the diverse exhibition contents,
then investing in an admission ticket will certainly elevate your experience and satisfaction!
If your time in Ljubljana is abundant,
and you're not rushing off to explore other parts of Slovenia,
I wholeheartedly recommend getting a ticket and immersing yourself fully in all the castle's interior wonders!

2. Exploring the Castle Courtyard and Interior Sights

Once you cross the bridge from the parking lot and step inside the castle,
you'll be greeted by the magnificent buildings perched atop the hill.

If you walk up a slight incline,
you'll discover an inner courtyard
that's much larger than it appeared from below.
Surrounded by castle walls on all sides,
with a heart-shaped well in the center,
it naturally drew people in to take photos.

On one side, there was a small weapon exhibition hall,
which you could explore without a separate ticket.

It displayed a few pieces of armor and weapons
used in the medieval era,
making it a quick and interesting stop.

Towards the castle walls, there was a terrace.
Climbing the stairs led you onto the walls,
offering views of the city below.

Though it's only about one floor up,
it offered a fantastic panoramic view of the courtyard.

On the opposite side, you could see Ljubljana city.
Unlike charming Maribor,
it definitely had a more urban feel.
While there's a paid observation tower
that's quite a bit higher,
I highly recommend checking out this spot, as it's a free viewpoint.

Ancient castle walls, modern buildings,
and the Alps stretching out behind them!
It really was a place that showcased Ljubljana in a single glance.

After enjoying the views, I followed the crowd
and headed underground.
While maintaining the old structure,
there were small exhibition spaces all around.

There were exhibits about the castle's history and restoration,
revealing that Ljubljana Castle had a period from the 19th century onwards
when it was used as a penal institution and prison.

That's why, throughout the underground areas,
you could see traces of that time.
It offered a slightly different vibe compared to the castle's grand appearance above ground.

Downstairs, in one corner, you'll find a fantastic
photo zone themed around the iconic Ljubljana dragon!
Ljubljana is steeped in the legend of a dragon being vanquished,
so it's no surprise you'll spot dragon motifs all over the city.
I highly recommend striking a pose with the dragon at
Ljubljana Castle's photo zone – it's a must-do!
3. The Chapel and Mini Exhibition Hall

Tucked away in one corner of the courtyard, you'll discover a lovely little chapel.
It might be small, but with its altar, pews, and the gentle glow of light through the stained glass,
simply sitting there for a bit offered such a wonderfully peaceful atmosphere.

The ceiling frescoes, with their incredible depth-creating structure
and delicate patterns, were absolutely stunning.
It definitely gave off a different vibe than the castle's more rugged exterior.

As I wandered around the courtyard,
I stumbled upon a small exhibition space.
No separate admission fee, so of course, I popped in to take a look!

It featured insect-related artworks, but honestly,
I was more thrilled by the chance to get a closer look at the castle's interior architecture
– that was the real gem for me!
4. Observation Tower, Paid Exhibitions, and Even Restaurants

Keep in mind that free admission only gets you into a small portion of Ljubljana Castle;
if you want to dive deeper and explore all the amazing experiences,
a paid ticket is definitely the way to go.
The Museum of Slovenian History, a permanent exhibition,
is one of Ljubljana Castle's main draws.
From an immersive 4D video experience showcasing the castle's rich history
to incredible views from the observation deck,
a whole world of different spaces is operated here.
And for those who love a good challenge, there's even an escape room game inside called 'Escape Castle,'
making it super popular with travelers looking for interactive fun!

What's more, Ljubljana Castle boasts a fantastic Michelin-starred restaurant!
They put a modern spin on traditional Slovenian dishes,
and if you're planning a meal, I highly recommend making a reservation.
Beyond that, you'll find charming cafes and a wine bar, meaning you can
literally do all your sightseeing, dining, and even grab dessert without ever leaving the castle grounds.

While I couldn't dive into all the paid facilities on this trip due to time,
Ljubljana Castle really struck me as far more than just a simple medieval tourist spot.
It's truly a vibrant cultural hub, bringing together stunning views, fascinating exhibitions,
engaging experiences, and fantastic dining all in one incredible location.
5. Souvenir Shop Frederick, and Cute Mouse Merchandise

Right next to the castle entrance, you'll find a rather unique souvenir shop.
Perhaps it's because of its past as a prison,
but the mascot here is a mouse dressed in a prisoner's uniform!

The interior of the shop felt more like a curated concept store
than your typical tourist souvenir shop.
Alongside various items themed around Ljubljana Castle,
you can also pick up visitor information pamphlets here.

They had a wide array of merchandise, including dolls featuring the Frederic character,
fashion accessories, tumblers, and eco-friendly bags.

There was also quite a diverse selection of clothing with cute graphics,
but the prices were a bit on the higher side, so I just enjoyed browsing.

I also skipped the magnets and keychains
after looking at them, as they didn't quite capture the unique essence of a trip to Ljubljana for me.
6. The Peasant Revolts Monument Near Ljubljana Castle

After exploring the castle, I discovered a lovely walking
and relaxation area just above the parking lot.
There was a massive sculpture there, so I took a moment to check it out.

This is the Peasant Revolts Monument, said to have been erected to commemorate
the 400th anniversary of the peasant revolts that took place in the 16th century.
While it might not be a monument of particular significance from a foreign visitor's perspective,
its unique sculptural beauty and grand scale made it a worthwhile stop after visiting the castle.
Ljubljana Castle: An essential stop on your Ljubljana itinerary!
