📍 St. Nicholas Cathedral
Dolničarjeva ulica 1, 1000 Ljubljana, Slovenia
St. Nicholas Cathedral is conveniently located close to Dragon Bridge, a must-visit spot in Ljubljana.
On my way from Maribor to Bled, I spent about half a day exploring Ljubljana. Covering Ljubljana Castle → lunch → Old Town sightseeing took me approximately 4 to 5 hours, which felt just right.
There's no dedicated parking at St. Nicholas Cathedral, so I parked at the Parliament Square parking lot and explored on foot.
From Parliament Square to St. Nicholas Cathedral, it's about a 10-minute walk. I highly recommend walking and taking in the surroundings as you go.

1. Exterior and Bronze Doors

From a distance, its green dome gives it a distinctive presence, but when you get closer and face the front, it turns out to be a building with a surprisingly modest exterior.

The magnificent bronze doors, along with the frescoes and sculptures on the exterior walls, clearly indicate that this building is a cathedral.
Notably, the bronze doors are said to be the work of a renowned sculptor and depict the history of Slovenia.
Near the entrance, the visiting hours for tourists and the admission fee were displayed. Since the admission fee was a modest 3 Euros, I stepped inside without too many expectations.

Stepping inside, the entrance alone felt incredibly grand.
Surprisingly, it wasn't crowded,
allowing for a peaceful and reflective visit.
2. Interior Frescoes and Ceiling Artistry

The interior unveiled a completely different ambiance,
with **frescoes meticulously filling every inch of the walls and ceilings,**
and **various ornaments creating a truly magnificent impression.**

Beyond what the exterior suggested, the interior felt even more expansive,
with shimmering gold accents adorning every corner.
Inside, I noticed many visitors seated on chairs,
engrossed in quiet prayer,
which naturally encouraged a more respectful and mindful exploration.

What truly captivated me were **the murals stretching from the pillars all the way to the ceiling,**
which are **masterpieces by an Italian artist from the 1700s.**
They possess an incredible three-dimensional effect, creating fascinating optical illusions.

I found myself settling into a chair, just to gaze up at the ceiling murals
for what felt like ages.

The murals, seamlessly extending all the way to the organ's position at the back,
were certainly one of the compelling reasons to visit St. Nicholas Cathedral.
3. The Grand Central Altar and Serene Side Chapels

The central altar, directly ahead, was particularly breathtaking,
adorned with intricate carvings and topped with a display of
flowers and a poignant portrait.

I soon discovered that **a special, small exhibition was being held to commemorate**
**the 30th anniversary of Pope John Paul II's inaugural visit to Slovenia.**
It featured portraits, photographs, and even cherished mementos.

To the left and right of the central altar,
an abundance of sculptures and paintings, both grand and intimate, adorned the space.
The interior's state of preservation was truly exceptional,
allowing me to wander slowly and marvel at its beauty at every turn.

Beside the main hall, **several arched prayer spaces**
were gracefully divided.

Even within these smaller prayer spaces,
you'd discover **stunning three-dimensional murals extending from the pillars to the ceiling**
and **exquisitely detailed sculptures adorning the altars.**

The sculptures dotted around were also works by famous 17th-century sculptors,
which had me looking around every corner in awe.

Filled with a majestic and sacred atmosphere,
I unexpectedly found myself in a reverent mood,
praying for my family's health and happiness.

Every single light and decoration on the walls and ceiling
felt truly meticulous and opulent.
I visited this place without any prior information,
but it was so breathtakingly beautiful it left me in awe.
I truly recommend making it a must-visit during your Ljubljana trip.
