A Guide to Slovenia's Supermarkets

Whether you're traveling through Slovenia
or, like us, settling in for a longer stay, perhaps a month or more,
you'll naturally find yourself frequenting the local supermarkets.
(We actually went every single day! 😂)
Slovenia's major supermarket chains, such as
Hofer, Mercator, Lidl, and SPAR,
each boast their own unique charm and offerings.
And let's not forget the hypermarket giant, E.Leclerc!

Today, we'll be comparing a total of four supermarkets.
For me, three of these stores were right near my accommodation:
Hofer, Lidl, and Mercator.
Having these three so close meant
I could switch between them for my grocery runs.
During my one-month stay,
I visited supermarkets every day, so
I'm ready to share a comparison packed with firsthand experience!
2. A Closer Look at Each Supermarket
1️⃣
Hofer
✅ Key Features
This renowned German discount supermarket chain,
an affiliate of ALDI,
operates as Hofer in Austria and Slovenia.
The stores are clean, well-organized, and no-frills,
with many items displayed directly in their shipping boxes.
This approach helps reduce labor costs,
resulting in very affordable prices across the board.
Their private label (PB) products, in particular, are of exceptional quality,
often rivaling well-known brands.
This makes Hofer an ideal place for stocking up on everyday essentials and groceries
without breaking the bank.
You'll find a great selection of dairy products like milk, yogurt, and cheese,
fresh eggs, various nuts,
frozen pizzas and convenient frozen meals,
pasta, and canned goods.
It's generally an excellent spot for all your daily food necessities.
2️⃣
Lidl
✅ Key Features
Alongside Hofer, Lidl is considered one of Europe's top value supermarkets.
One of Lidl's greatest advantages is
its in-store bakery section.
Here, you can savor freshly baked croissants, pains au chocolat, and baguettes
baked right in the store every morning, all at incredibly affordable prices.
Just like Hofer,
Lidl also has many excellent private label products,
making it a fantastic place for budget-friendly food and household item purchases.
You can find freshly baked bakery goods,
small-pack sliced cheeses,
ham, salami, and various manufactured products
at wonderfully affordable prices.
3️⃣
Spar
✅ Features
Starting in the Netherlands,
Spar is a beloved supermarket chain
found all across Europe.
They operate a variety of formats, from smaller SPAR City stores
to massive Interspar hypermarkets,
catering to different scales.
While the prices might be a little higher
than budget discount stores, the freshness of their fruits and vegetables is exceptional,
and the stores are always well-organized and pleasant to navigate.
Their in-store deli corners, salad bars,
and ready-to-eat meals like warm roasted chicken or fried foods
are particularly well-stocked,
making them perfect for a quick and satisfying meal.
Although it wasn't near my home, so I didn't visit often,
I loved being able to find a wider variety of ingredients here
that weren't available at Lidl or Hofer.
4️⃣
Mercator
✅ Features
Mercator is the iconic retail brand symbolizing Slovenia,
a supermarket you'll easily encounter
no matter where you go in the country.
While prices are a bit higher compared to Hofer or Lidl,
its accessibility is unparalleled, with stores densely spread out
not just in major city centers, but also deep within the alleyways
of tiny towns and rural villages.
Another huge advantage is that Mercator offers the widest selection
of Slovenian-made products, including local brewery beers,
regional farm wines, cheeses, and jams.
You can purchase specialty wines from Slovenia and the Balkan region,
artisanal cheeses from local farms,
traditional Slovenian sweets, and unique local jams here.
The Mercator hypermarkets are enormous,
making them the absolute best place to buy
local Slovenian souvenirs and gifts.
3. E.Leclerc (르클레르) – The Mega Hypermarket Experience
While not a common neighborhood store,
E.Leclerc is a massive French-owned hypermarket
majestically located on the outskirts of major cities like Ljubljana.
Its sheer scale is immense, comparable to
hypermarkets like Trader Joe's or Costco.
You'll find everything here, from everyday groceries
to wines, electronics, kitchenware, and even clothing –
truly nothing is missing!
What truly stands out is the quality and variety
in its direct-import French cheese, wine, bakery,
and frozen seafood sections – a testament to French supermarket pride,
easily the most impressive of all markets in Slovenia.
Just browsing the wine library with hundreds of varieties
and the fresh fish/seafood counter
is a delight for the eyes!
From directly imported artisanal French/European cheeses and butter,
French wines and champagnes,
to in-house made desserts
and a vast selection of frozen seafood (shrimp, scallops, etc.),
you'll definitely feel a different vibe
compared to other Slovenian supermarkets.
However, since it's typically located on city outskirts,
requiring a car or bus to reach,
I recommend setting aside a dedicated trip if you're staying long-term for bulk shopping
or hunting for gourmet ingredients for a special meal.
4. Pro Shopping Tips!
✅ Your Go-To for Everyday Essentials
For basic ingredients and daily necessities,
grab them at Hofer or Lidl to
significantly save on your grocery budget!
✅ Close and Convenient
For small purchases near your accommodation or local wines,
conveniently located
Mercator or SPAR are great options.
✅ Bulk Shopping & Souvenirs
When you need to stock up on groceries in bulk,
or are looking for gourmet cheese, seafood, or wine,
I recommend E.Leclerc or Interspar.
Before heading back to Korea,
we bought most of our souvenirs at E.Leclerc.
5. Wrapping Up
During my month-long stay in Slovenia,
one of the biggest joys was
supermarket shopping.
With many large supermarkets around,
we could shop at a different one every day,
and it was wonderful to try out all sorts of things.

make sure to check out the supermarket shopping.
Not only do they have Slovenian products,
but they also sell many other European goods,
making it a great place to get all your shopping done in one go – highly recommended!

E.Leclerc is a French-owned hypermarket. The quality and variety of its direct-import French cheeses, wines, bakery items, and frozen seafood section are by far the most outstanding among all supermarkets in Slovenia.
