A Must-Read If You're Visiting This Summer in July or August!

Are you planning a trip to Universal Studios Japan in Osaka
during the peak summer heat of July or August?
Japan’s summers are notorious for being incredibly hot and humid,
so the thought of standing in long lines for popular attractions
under the blazing sun might feel a bit daunting.
Especially if you’re traveling with young kids,
this worry is probably hitting even closer to home.
That's why today, I'm sharing some insider tips on how I dramatically cut down waiting times
on my USJ trip last summer, along with
how to book these express tickets at a discount!

First, let’s break down the different ticket options
and how to get discounts for Universal Studios Japan.
📍 Basically, tickets are divided into two main categories: the 1-Day Studio Pass
and the Express Pass.

✅ The 1-Day Studio Pass is the mandatory ticket
you need just to enter the theme park.
Based on today's date,
tickets are open for booking up to 2 months in advance.
For instance, if you book on June 30th,
you can only reserve dates up to August 30th.
Also, the Studio Pass price is pretty consistent,
with all dates priced at around ~$60.

✅ Next, the Express Pass is a separate add-on ticket
that dramatically slashes your waiting times for rides.

The wait times for rides in Super Nintendo World,
the most popular zone at USJ,
can easily skyrocket to 1 to 3 hours.
Standing in line for that long in the summer heat
will leave you completely exhausted before you even get on the ride!

But if you use an Express Pass that includes these rides,
you get to enter through a dedicated queue,
meaning you can skip most of the wait.
However, with so many options like Express Pass 4, 5, 7, or 8,
it can be quite confusing.
The number next to the pass name simply indicates
how many attractions are included in that package.
Keep in mind that you don’t just pick any rides you want;
each Express Pass has a fixed selection of rides assigned to it.
❗️ So, when booking, you must double-check if
the Super Nintendo World attractions are included.

The package I highly recommend is
'Tram Car & Jaws 4'.
It includes entry to Super Nintendo World, Mario Kart,
and even Donkey Kong's Crazy Tram Car,
making it the absolute best value-for-money pass.
(And it usually has relatively decent stock available!)

I also used an Express Pass during my trip
to Universal Studios Japan last summer.
Let me share my honest, first-hand experience with you!

The one I used was the Express Pass 7,
which included 3 attractions in Super Nintendo World
and 2 attractions in The Wizarding World of Harry Potter.
As a quick tip, each attraction comes with a designated entry time,
and since you can board right at your scheduled slot,
there’s absolutely no need to rush.
Many visitors pull a dawn "open run" just to get into Nintendo World,
but since our pass guaranteed our area entry
along with specific ride times,
we were able to arrive casually around 10:00 AM.

Because most of the early crowd had rushed straight to Nintendo World,
the wait times for other rides during this window
were incredibly short—mostly under 30 minutes.
So, I started with rides like Jaws and Jurassic Park: The Ride,
which weren't covered by my Express Pass
but had almost no line at all.
Even though the July heat was intense at over 30°C (86°F),
waiting for just 10 minutes or so was totally manageable.

After that, we headed over to Harry Potter
right in time for our Express Pass slot.
At that moment, the standby line for the Harry Potter ride
was relatively long—around 40 to 50 minutes.
But by showing our pass, we entered through a separate lane
and boarded after waiting only about 10 minutes.

Especially for 'Flight of the Hippogriff,'
the queue area is entirely outdoors,
making the summer heat feel pretty brutal while waiting.
If you're visiting with children, an Express Pass
feels like an absolute must-have.
Once we finished enjoying the Harry Potter area,
our entry time for Super Nintendo World arrived,
and we headed straight over to the rides.

Even though it was around 2:00 PM—the hottest part of the day—
the standby wait times were still a hefty 2 hours.
But thanks to our Express Pass, we bypassed the main queue,
entered through a dedicated line,
and boarded after waiting only about 20 minutes!

If we had stood in the regular lines,
riding just two major attractions would have easily eaten up 4 hours.
Considering the cost of flights to get all the way here,
using the Express Pass to cut down on wait times
actually turned out to be the most cost-effective way to travel.
Thanks to the pass, we finished all our must-do rides by 4:00 PM,
meaning we got to wrap up our Universal trip in just half a day!
This left our entire evening free to explore the city,
making us feel like we got way more value out of our day!

Today, I shared my honest experience of using the Express Pass
at Universal Studios Japan last summer,
along with how to book these tickets at a discount.
Osaka in the summer is incredibly humid and hot,
so standing in long queues for rides—
even a short wait for an outdoor attraction—can feel twice as draining.
So, even if it feels a bit pricey, we highly recommend
getting an Express Pass, and if you are traveling
with kids, we recommend booking it as an absolute must.

Tickets are available for booking up to two months in advance from the date of purchase. The ticket price is ~$60, regardless of the day of the week or season.
These numbers indicate the number of attractions you can ride using the Express Pass. Since each pass specifies which attractions are eligible, make sure to check if your desired attractions are included when booking.
The article recommends the 'Tram Car & Jaws 4' pass. It offers the best value as it includes entry to the Nintendo area, as well as access to Mario Kart and Donkey Kong's Crazy Tram Car.
At 2:00 PM, when the regular wait time can reach up to 2 hours, using an Express Pass allows you to board after only about a 20-minute wait. Since you enter through a separate line, it significantly reduces wait times, especially during the hot summer months.
