Don't let USJ ticket options overwhelm you! Our complete 2026 guide breaks down Studio Passes, Express Passes, and how to guarantee Super Nintendo World entry.

Planning a trip to Universal Studios Japan (USJ) in Osaka
but feeling completely overwhelmed by the endless ticket and Express Pass options?
Trust me, you're not alone!
As someone who has visited Universal Studios parks all over the world
and been to USJ more times than I can count,
I'm here to break down exactly which tickets and Express Passes you actually need.
I've even included my top insider tips for scoring discounts on these pricey passes!

I've organized everything sequentially,
so feel free to skip to the sections you need most :)
1. Universal Studios Japan Ticket Types Explained

There are quite a few ticket options for USJ,
but I'll focus on the most popular options that 99% of travelers buy.
- Basic Entry Ticket (Studio Pass)
This is your standard, most affordable general admission ticket.
It lets you enter the park, ride the rides, eat the food,
shop for souvenirs, and watch the parades.
If this lets you do everything, why are there more expensive options?

It all comes down to Super Nintendo World.
Because Super Nintendo World has only one entrance/exit,
the park strictly limits the number of people allowed inside at any given time.
Because of this, in addition to your basic Studio Pass, you need a
Timed Entry Ticket or an Area Entry Guarantee Ticket to get into this specific zone.

A Timed Entry Ticket can be claimed for free by anyone
through the official USJ app after you've scanned your ticket and entered the park.
However, it's strictly first-come, first-served,
meaning doing the 'rope drop' (arriving before the park opens) is practically mandatory 🥹
If the park officially opens at 8:30 AM, you need to be at the gates by 8:00 AM at the latest...
But waking up that early on vacation is rough, right?

- Super Nintendo World Area Entry Guarantee + Kansai Joy Pass
To solve this, they created bundle options that include an
Area Entry Guarantee, ensuring you get into Super Nintendo World.
Because honestly, going all the way to Universal Studios Osaka
and missing out on Nintendo World would be a tragedy!
Naturally, this bundle includes your basic Studio Pass as well :)

When you buy the Entry Guarantee option,
you select your Nintendo World entry time slot in advance.
As long as you enter during that window (you can stay as long as you want),
you completely avoid the stress of a rope drop
and are guaranteed to see the Nintendo area. It's a huge advantage.

This bundle also includes the Kansai Joy Pass.
You might be wondering what that is!
It actually has nothing to do with Universal Studios itself,
but it's an incredibly useful pass for exploring Osaka.

It grants you free access to popular Osaka attractions like the
Umeda Sky Building and Harukas 300.
I bought this exact option on my recent trip and got my money's worth tenfold while exploring Osaka!
I'll do a deeper dive into the Joy Pass in a future post :)

2. Universal Studios Japan Express Pass Options

Next up is the Express Pass.
Simply put, this allows you to use a dedicated fast-track lane
to skip the regular lines for specific rides.
= You are literally buying time with money.

There are so many different types of Express Passes
that it's impossible to list them all here, but
the core differences boil down to just two things:
1) Does it include a Super Nintendo World Area Entry Guarantee?
>> Note: Based on my many visits, you absolutely do NOT need a timed entry ticket for the Harry Potter area anymore!
2) Which specific rides are included?

The number next to the Express Pass
tells you the number of rides you get to fast-track.
Express 4 gives you fast access to 4 rides,
while Express 7 covers 7 rides.
They are quite expensive, but remember: this is entirely separate from your park admission.
= "The Express Pass is so expensive, it must include my park ticket, right?" >> NOPE.
You MUST buy a Studio Pass (Entry Ticket) AND an Express Pass!

Also, Express Passes are sold in limited quantities.
Despite the high price tag, they sell out weeks in advance during peak seasons...
I learned this the hard way on my last trip and was forced to do the rope drop ㅠㅠ

My one-sentence review of the Universal Studios Japan Rope Drop:
As a reasonably healthy woman in my late 20s,
it's doable... but the physical toll is massive.
I literally had to sit in a park restaurant for over an hour just to recover! LOL
I had used an Express Pass on a previous visit, and the difference in my energy levels was night and day.
I highly, highly recommend buying it if you can afford it.
If you are visiting during peak season in 2026...? It's an absolute must.
It's pricey, but it is 100% worth the money.
Next time, I'm booking way in advance to secure my Express Pass!
