With the holiday season approaching,
many of you are likely planning a trip to
Universal Studios Japan (USJ) in Osaka.
For first-time visitors to USJ,
the most confusing part of the planning process is usually
figuring out the ticket types and entry rules.
Today, I'm going to break down the different ticket options, how to book them,
and share my honest review of a morning entry strategy!
USJ Ticket Types & Booking Guide

Let's start by explaining the ticket types.
📌 USJ tickets are broadly divided into two categories:
Studio Passes (Entry Tickets) and Express Passes.
The Studio Pass is ▶️ your basic admission ticket required to enter the park.
The Express Pass is ▶️ an add-on ticket purchased separately
that allows you to skip the regular lines for specific attractions.

The basic Studio Pass itself comes in several variations.
I've summarized the most popular options below.
Ticket Type | What's Included | Price (Saturday Base) |
[2-Person] 1-Day Pass + Vouchers | 2x 1-Day Passes + 3x 1,000 JPY Vouchers | ~$165 |
1-Day Studio Pass | 1x 1-Day Pass | ~$72 |
Studio Pass + Nintendo + Kansai Joy Pass | 1x 1-Day Pass + Super Nintendo World Timed Entry + Kansai Joy Pass | ~$113 |
📍 First, the 1-Day Studio Pass is the most basic option.
👉🏻 It's perfect if you're visiting solo or as a couple and just want standard entry.
Since it has no extra perks, it's the most budget-friendly choice.
📍 Next is the [2-Person] Pass + Vouchers package.
This includes two admission tickets plus three 1,000 JPY (~$7)
vouchers that can be used for food or merchandise inside the park.
👉🏻 If you plan on buying souvenirs or dining at the park restaurants,
this package is actually a much better deal.

📍 The third option is a comprehensive bundle that includes
a Studio Pass, a guaranteed Timed Entry Ticket to Super Nintendo World,
and a Kansai Joy Pass.
👉🏻 If getting into Super Nintendo World is an absolute must for you,
and you also plan on exploring downtown Osaka,
this is hands-down the best ticket to buy.
You can check out these three options and more,

📍 Next up is the premium add-on: the Express Pass.
Wait times for popular attractions easily exceed
an hour on a normal day.
👉🏻 If you hate standing in long lines, this is a lifesaver.
(Plus, waiting outside in the winter cold is no joke!)
However, with so many options like Express 4, 5, 7, and 8,
you might be wondering which one to choose.
Let me make it simple for you.
If you are buying an Express Pass in 2026, you absolutely must
book one that includes Donkey Kong and Mario Kart.
These two have the longest wait times in the entire park!
Other than that, Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey,
and Despicable Me Minion Mayhem are highly recommended,
so keep those in mind when selecting your pass!
You can browse and book the different Express Passes below!

Crucial Rules for Entering USJ
Before you go, there are a couple of
important rules regarding entry that you need to know.

1. No Outside Food or Drinks
Unlike some other theme parks, USJ is
quite strict about bringing in outside food and beverages.
Officially, you are only allowed to bring in
one water bottle per person.
You might hear stories of people sneaking in small snacks
without getting caught, but bag checks are standard,
so it's best not to risk it!

2. No Re-entry Allowed
Once you enter Universal Studios Japan,
re-entry is strictly prohibited.
Some people claim they were able to leave and come back by saying
they "left something essential at the hotel,"
but this is highly situational and not a guaranteed loophole. Plan accordingly!
My Realistic Morning Entry Experience

Finally, let me share what it was actually like
arriving at the park in the morning.
I wasn't about to rope-drop at the crack of dawn,
so I arrived at a comfortable 9:00 AM.
At this time, there was absolutely no line at the entrance.
I scanned my ticket and walked right in.
However, even at 9 AM, the standby line for the
Nintendo attractions was already pushing 2 hours.

💡 But because I had an Express Pass,
I strategically hit the less popular rides first.
Once the clock strikes 10 AM, wait times everywhere skyrocket!
I started with Jaws, which had literally zero wait time.
It's not a high-speed thrill ride,
but it felt like watching a live-action show and was surprisingly fun.

Next, I headed over to Jurassic Park: The Ride.
The regular standby wait was already up to 45 minutes.
However, the Single Rider line was completely empty,
so I only waited about 10 minutes before boarding!
I got a little wet, but it was an absolute blast.

For the rest of the day, I used my Express Pass
to breeze through the massive lines for Harry Potter and Nintendo.
I had an amazing time and headed back to the city around 4-5 PM!
Quick USJ Summary

To wrap things up, here is a quick summary
of everything we covered today.
Tickets are divided into ▶️ Studio Passes (Entry) and Express Passes.
If you want to avoid spending half your day in line,
👉🏻 you should definitely book an Express Pass in advance.
Keep in mind that when entering USJ,
outside food/drinks and re-entry are strictly
prohibited, so plan your meals accordingly.
Finally, if you have an Express Pass,
arriving around 9:00 AM is perfectly fine
for a relaxed, stress-free day.
If you aren't buying an Express Pass, you'll need to arrive
much earlier to beat the crowds to the major rides!
