USJ to Kansai Airport JR Train Review 2026: Why We Chose It

When you're heading to Universal Studios Japan (USJ) from Kansai International Airport (KIX) in Osaka, the most straightforward and comfortable option is often the limousine bus. It's a direct route with no transfers, and it's the method I personally used for my arrival trip.

However, the return journey from USJ to Kansai Airport presented a challenge: the airport limousine bus schedule.

Based on departures from Universal Studios Japan, the first bus typically leaves at 10:50 AM, with buses running approximately every 30 minutes until 7:00 PM.

Comparing this with our flight time, the bus schedule just didn't align. We ended up having to find an alternative.

If you're planning to take the limousine bus from USJ to KIX, it's absolutely crucial to double-check the bus timetable against your flight departure.

1. Getting to Kansai Airport from Osaka

There are several ways to get to Kansai Airport from Osaka.

If you're departing from the Namba area, the Rapi:t Express train can get you there in just 34 minutes.

From Umeda or Shin-Osaka, many travelers opt for the Haruka Limited Express.

While it's possible to take one of these express trains by first heading into the city center from USJ, we found the idea of an extra transfer cumbersome. So, we decided to stick with the regular JR local trains.

2. Our JR Train Experience from Universal Studios Japan to Kansai Airport

Our journey started right outside USJ, at Universal City Station.

First, we took the JR Yumesaki Line to Nishikujo Station.

We were lucky enough to catch a train decorated with Mario characters! This first leg of the journey took about 5 minutes.

At Nishikujo Station, you'll transfer to the Kansai Airport Rapid Service (Kanku Rapid Service).

A critical point to remember when transferring to the Kanku Rapid Service is that the airport-bound trains arriving at Nishikujo Station split midway.

Only cars 1 through 4 continue to the airport, while cars 5 and beyond head towards Wakayama.

Boarding the wrong section could lead you far from your destination, so always double-check the electronic display boards or listen carefully to the announcements.

We even confirmed with a station attendant to be absolutely sure we were on the right part of the train – it's always a good idea if you're feeling uncertain!

The total travel time was approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes, and the cost for an adult ticket was about ~$8.

You can purchase a single ticket from Universal City Station all the way to Kansai Airport.

Enjoying the views outside and finding a seat, we arrived at Osaka's Kansai Airport in no time!

When traveling from USJ to Kansai Airport, the most convenient option remains the airport limousine bus.

However, as we experienced, the bus service doesn't operate for extended hours, so it's essential to check the timetable before you plan your trip.

If the timing doesn't work out, don't hesitate to take the JR train, just like we did!

While it involves a transfer, it's a reliable and often faster alternative to reach Kansai Airport if the bus isn't an option.
