Maximize your Universal Studios Japan adventure in 2026! Discover Studio Pass and Express Pass options, plus tips for Harry Potter & Nintendo World.

Universal Studios Japan, affectionately known as USJ, is one of those iconic destinations that almost needs no introduction. Despite the cost, it's consistently packed with visitors, and what's more, people frequently return for another dose of magic. I recently made a return trip myself! My first visit was a bit of a whirlwind, where I mostly just followed along, so this time I made sure to gather all the essential tips and tricks to share with you.

First things first: when planning your Universal Studios Japan adventure, the basic Studio Pass is all you *need* for entry. However, with the park's immense popularity, wait times can be substantial. That's where the Express Pass comes in – it's designed to drastically cut down your time in lines. Crucially, if you want to enter highly sought-after areas like The Wizarding World of Harry Potter or Super Nintendo World, you'll typically need a timed entry ticket. You can try your luck by doing an 'open run' (arriving before opening) to secure an e-ticket on the day, but this can be uncertain and a bit of a hassle. For a smoother experience, most visitors opt to purchase an Express Pass 4, which includes guaranteed entry to these popular zones. If you're a true thrill-seeker and want to maximize your ride count, consider an Express Pass 7. But hey, if you don't mind waiting and are happy just soaking in the atmosphere, then a standard Universal Studios Osaka Studio Pass will do just fine!

On my recent visit, I personally went with the Universal Studios Osaka Express Pass 4. This pass granted me guaranteed entry to both The Wizarding World of Harry Potter and Super Nintendo World, plus one ride within each of those areas. Outside of those zones, it included the Demon Slayer XR Ride and a choice of one from Hollywood Dream – The Ride, The Flying Dinosaur, or Jaws.
My strategy for that last choice was to check the wait times on the day and use my Express Pass on whichever had the longest line – for the others, I'd leverage the Single Rider line when possible.

I headed straight for The Flying Dinosaur first, and because it was early, the wait wasn't too bad. I remember being absolutely terrified the first time I rode it, but this time, it was just pure fun! Haha.
The Demon Slayer XR Ride is incredibly popular, often seeing wait times of over two hours, even for single riders. This is exactly where an Express Pass proves invaluable, and thanks to mine, I breezed through the line.

I could have used it on Jaws, but I held out and used it for Hollywood Dream – The Ride instead, which turned out to be a brilliant decision as its queue was significantly longer.

Purchasing a Universal Studios Osaka Express Pass truly lets you cut down on wait times and maximize your enjoyment. After experiencing it myself, I'd personally say the Express Pass 4 is essential, while the Express Pass 7 is more of an optional upgrade. Keep in mind, there's also plenty to see and do beyond the rides, like Minion Park, various souvenir shops, and the spectacular parades, so choose the pass that best fits your priorities for the day.

When it comes to the Express Pass, the type and price fluctuate significantly based on the specific rides and themed areas included. Your best bet is to determine your preferred combination and check the prices directly.

Typically, Super Nintendo World and The Wizarding World of Harry Potter are the most popular areas to include.
>> Universal Studios Japan Express Pass 4 & 7
While the cost was definitely an investment, I have zero regrets. In fact, I think I would have regretted *not* getting it. Towards the end of the day, I had some extra time and decided to wait in a 1.5-hour line for one ride – and that was enough to completely drain my energy!
Next time, I might even spring for the Express Pass 7...
The Express 4 pass the author used included entry to the Harry Potter Area and Nintendo World. Within these two areas, one attraction each could be ridden, and outside of these areas, one could choose to ride either the Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba XR Ride or one of Hollywood Dream – The Ride, The Flying Dinosaur, or Jaws.
The Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba XR Ride was very popular, resulting in wait times of over 2 hours for both single riders and general queues. In contrast, The Flying Dinosaur had a shorter queue due to an early visit, so the author didn't have to wait long to ride it.
Based on personal experience, the author suggested that Express Pass 4 is essential, while Express Pass 7 is optional. They recommended choosing according to one's purpose, as there are other attractions like Minion Park, souvenir shops, and parades to enjoy.
According to the article, a Universal Studios Japan 1-day ticket for A Season is listed from ~$55 on Klook and from ~$55 on KKDAY. Ticket prices are the same across platforms but vary by season.
