that serves top-tier unagi without the astronomical price tag.
That's when I discovered this local favorite tucked inside the lively Ohatsutenjin shopping street.
I brought my parents along, and it turned out to be an absolute hit.
The Cozy Interior
The restaurant features single-counter seats perfect for solo travelers,
as well as comfortable tables that are great for families and small groups.
Because the space is relatively small and highly popular,
I highly recommend making a reservation in advance.
We booked ahead, and they had our table ready right as we walked in.
No waiting in long lines is always a win!
The Menu at Unagino Naruse Ohatsutenjin
Even though this spot is a favorite among locals,
they have English and Korean menus available, making ordering incredibly easy.
After browsing through the options, we went for the premium "Matsu" (Pine) option,
which features a generous, whole grilled Japanese eel.
While waiting for our food,
they handed us a helpful guide in English explaining the unique preparation of their unagi
and the best ways to enjoy it. It was fun to read through before the feast arrived!

Before long, our gorgeous Matsu Eel bowls were served.
The set comes beautifully presented with a savory clear broth,
fresh green onions, wasabi, and pickled ginger to complement the rich flavors.
To be honest, since this place is known for budget prices,
I expected the eel portion to be on the smaller side.
But when the lid opened, I was blown away by how massive and plump the eel was!
It had this gorgeous, glossy glaze that looked absolutely mouthwatering.
Taking the first bite, the texture was incredibly soft and tender,
and the sweet-savory sauce was perfectly balanced.
Eating the unagi on its own is fantastic, but adding a touch of
fresh green onions and a dab of wasabi elevates it to a whole new level.
The combo of green onions, wasabi, and fluffy rice is pure perfection.
You can't have a meal this perfect without a refreshing drink, right?
We ordered a couple of ice-cold beers to wash down the rich, savory eel. Pure bliss! 🍻
