When you travel to Osaka, visiting at least one
observatory to take in the sweeping city skyline
is an absolute must.
While there are several observation decks across the city,
if you're planning a daytime visit, the Kuchu Teien (Floating Garden) is the perfect spot.
Today, I'll walk you through how to book tickets in advance,
how to get there, and my personal review of a daytime visit!

Instead of buying a standalone ticket, you'll often find
that the Floating Garden is included in city passes.
If you plan on visiting multiple tourist attractions
across Osaka in addition to the observatory,
using a city pass offers much better value for your money.
Notably, the Osaka Amazing Pass includes free entry before 3:00 PM,
making it a highly cost-effective way to travel.

Next, let's cover how to get to the Umeda Sky Building
and what to expect regarding wait times.

From Umeda Station, it's about a
10-minute walk to the Sky Building.
When you exit Umeda Station, you'll immediately spot this towering structure.
Since crowds of people are usually heading
in that exact direction, it's incredibly easy to find your way.

Just follow the flow of foot traffic, and you'll arrive at the building.
The Sky Building features a unique, mirror-like glass exterior,
and the architecture—two towers connected by a bridge at the top—is truly striking.

To access the Floating Garden Observatory from the ground floor,
you need to enter through the doors marked 'Fun Fun Plaza'
and head up to the 3rd floor first.
The 3rd floor serves as the main entrance for the observatory.
From here, you'll catch an elevator that takes you
directly to the ticket office on the 39th floor.

I visited around 1:30 PM on a weekend,
and the line was so long I couldn't even see the elevator.
It turns out the massive queue I saw from the first-floor entrance
was actually the line just to get into the observatory!

It took about 20 minutes of waiting before we could finally board the elevator.
❗️ Because the Osaka Amazing Pass allows free entry only until 3:00 PM,
this early afternoon window tends to be incredibly crowded.
I highly recommend visiting earlier in the morning
if you want to save time and avoid the massive queues.

The elevator drops you off on the 35th floor,
where you'll take the famous mid-air escalator
up to the 39th-floor ticket office.
This escalator is a fantastic photo spot, so have your camera ready!

If you've booked a city pass or tickets in advance,
you can easily exchange them at the 39th-floor ticket office.

We were using the Kansai Joy Pass,
so we simply exchanged it for physical tickets as shown and headed inside.

Unlike the chaotic elevator lines downstairs,
the interior of the Floating Garden was surprisingly relaxed.
Compared to other observation decks I've visited,
the scale of this space felt wonderfully expansive.

We visited on a bright, sunny summer day,
and with the clear skies, the scenery was absolutely breathtaking.
One thing I personally loved about this observatory
is that instead of standard floor-to-ceiling glass, the windows are framed like artwork,
which makes for incredibly aesthetic photos.

Inside the observatory, there's also a cafe and bar area
where you can sip on a drink while soaking in the views.

In addition to standard coffee and soft drinks, they serve international beers
and even sweet parfaits. If you have some time to spare,
it's a fantastic spot to take a break and unwind.

I actually think the Osaka skyline viewed from the cafe side
is the absolute highlight of the Floating Garden.
You don't just get a typical concrete jungle view;
you get sweeping vistas of lush greenery and the winding river,
making the urban landscape feel incredibly refreshing.

The final and most famous highlight of the Floating Garden
is the outdoor observation deck, the Rooftop Sky Walk.
A quick heads-up before you head up there:
Umbrellas, food, and smoking are strictly prohibited,
and you should avoid wearing loose hats that could easily blow away in the wind.

When people think of the Floating Garden, this iconic
circular open-air space is usually the first image that comes to mind.
It's hard to grasp from the indoor deck,
but as you can see in the photos, the observatory
is suspended right in the middle, connecting the two towers.
Just looking down gives you a thrilling sense of vertigo!

The escalators that connect the main building to the observatory
are also suspended right in this central void.
Once you reach the highest floor, you get a completely
different perspective that you just can't see from below.

The cityscape viewed from the Sky Walk isn't drastically
different from what you see at the indoor observatory.
However, being able to take in the views without any glass in the way
makes the experience feel so much more vivid and clear.

The Umeda Sky Building is a surprisingly large observatory,
and with its floating escalators, indoor garden, and outdoor Sky Walk,
there is far more to enjoy here than you might expect.
Even better, tickets are reasonably priced at under ~$15 USD,
and with free entry included in the Osaka Amazing Pass,
it offers incredible value for travelers.

Ultimately, the true highlight of the Floating Garden is how it frames
Umeda's towering skyscrapers against the serene riverfront.
Because of this, I highly recommend visiting during the daytime
on a sunny day to experience the true charm of this architectural marvel.
