Osaka Dining: Tsukihi at Kintetsu Uehonmachi Dept Store

Fresh off the plane at Kansai International Airport? My first stop was the Kintetsu Uehonmachi bus terminal, which offers incredibly convenient access to the Sheraton Miyako Hotel and the Kintetsu Department Store.

The Sheraton Miyako Hotel is directly connected, and you'll find the Uehonmachi train station right in the basement.

It's a traveler's dream, especially when hunger strikes!

We headed straight for the 12th-floor restaurant area of the Kintetsu Uehonmachi Department Store.

Before heading up, don't miss exploring the basement! It's a treasure trove of delicious treats, including the famous Horai dumplings from Osaka, savory KYK Tonkatsu, and even a Godiva boutique. It's a fantastic spot for browsing and picking up some gourmet provisions.

Restaurant Exterior

We chose Tsukihi, a Japanese restaurant specializing in set menus. Traveling with my parents, I wanted a place with diverse options that weren't overly salty or heavy. Tsukihi fit the bill perfectly, offering a wide array of dishes to please everyone.

The interior of Tsukihi is spacious, with plenty of seating. Long, expansive windows offer a fantastic city view, filling the dining area with natural light. It felt clean, refreshing, and offered a wonderful urban backdrop for our meal. Since there were seven of us, we happily settled into two separate tables, one for three and one for four.

Menu

Just looking at the realistic food models made my mouth water! Deciding what to order was genuinely tough with so many tempting choices.

From sashimi sets to tempura platters, roast beef sets, salmon croquette sets, sukiyaki, and even shabu-shabu, the variety was truly impressive.

They pride themselves on using rice from Iwate Prefecture, cooked to perfection in traditional iron pots.

Have you heard of Yuba? It's the delicate film that forms on top when making tofu. Tsukihi even offers a special Yuba broth set, showcasing this unique and traditional ingredient.

Food

The Roast Beef Set, priced at ~$14, featured beautifully rare slices of beef, almost like a delicate cured ham. It was incredibly tender and flavorful.

Next, we tried the Sashimi and Miso Grilled Vegetables, a delightful set for ~$21. The sashimi practically melted in my mouth, and the accompanying mini grill with sweet miso paste was a revelation. Grilling fresh vegetables with that sweet miso was absolutely delicious and perfectly suited my palate.

For the younger ones, there was a fantastic Kids' Set for ~$7, featuring fried delights, a hamburg steak, rice balls, and a sweet dessert. It was a complete and kid-approved meal.

I also enjoyed the Grilled Salmon and Croquette Set, priced at ~$14. The fish cake was surprisingly delicious, and the simmered beans and black sesame tofu were delightful. While the miso soup was a tad on the salty side, the entire meal felt incredibly nutritious and satisfying.

Japanese cuisine can sometimes lean towards salty or oily, making it tricky to choose, especially when dining with different generations. Tsukihi, however, offered a fantastic range of dishes that appealed to everyone, from parents to kids. It was a wonderfully nutritious and varied first meal in Osaka, and after our feast, we headed back to our hotel, completely satisfied.
