Tsim Chai Kee Hong Kong Review 2026: Michelin Wontons?
Wondering if Michelin-recommended Tsim Chai Kee is actually worth the queue? Here is an honest review of their famous Central Hong Kong wonton noodles.
📍 Tsim Chai Kee Wonton Noodle
98 Wellington St, Central, Hong Kong
Today, we decided to head over to Central for lunch at the famous Tsim Chai Kee!

It was a chilly 57°F morning in Hong Kong today!
Our hotel room was surprisingly freezing.
I ended up turning the room's climate control unit off completely...
Even when set to heater mode, it wouldn't warm up the room at all.
It actually felt colder with it on, so off it went.
When we woke up, the windows were completely covered in condensation!

I originally stepped out wearing a classic Barbour jacket,
but the wind was so biting and cold
that I had to run back inside and swap it for a lightweight down jacket.
The winter wind in the city canyons can be incredibly sharp!

As soon as we walked out of the Ibis hotel, the iconic double-decker trams caught our eye.

Honestly, the location of the Ibis hotel is incredibly convenient for exploring.

Right next to Tsim Chai Kee is the famous Silk Milk Tea.
When we arrived, we saw a massive line and panicked for a second,
thinking the wait for noodles was going to be hours long!
But it turns out it was actually two separate lines overlapping!
One queue was for the milk tea, and the other was for the wontons!

Here we are at Tsim Chai Kee!

They are well-known for their Michelin-recommended status.

The menu might look a bit confusing at first glance, but it's actually very simple.
They basically serve one main style of wonton noodle soup,
and you just choose your noodle type and toppings.
You can select 1, 2, or 3 toppings.
The choices are: King Prawn Wontons, Dace Fish Balls, or Fresh Sliced Beef.

You pay at the counter on your way out.
Please note they only accept Cash or Octopus Cards.
No credit cards or Alipay here!

A common local tip: if the queue here is too long,
you can head right across the street to Mak's Noodle.
Many say the flavors are quite comparable!

1 Topping: Shrimp Wonton | 2 Toppings: Shrimp & Beef
True to the local dining culture, we sat at a shared 4-person table with strangers.
Our food arrived literally less than a minute after ordering.
Talk about lightning-fast service!
The ultimate fast food.

I initially thought the "87" written on our slip was our queue number,
but it was actually our total bill: $87 HKD (roughly $11 USD).
You need to bring this little slip to the register to pay,
so make sure you don't accidentally throw it away!

The noodles had that classic, ultra-springy, alkaline texture that Hong Kong is famous for.
The broth itself felt a bit mild and simple for my palate,
so I added a spoonful of the chili oil sitting on our table to give it a kick.

The turnover is incredibly fast here.
The people sitting directly across from us at our shared table changed once while we were still eating!

Looking at their Michelin plaques on the wall,
I noticed they only had awards listed up to the late 2010s, with none from the 2020s... Interesting!
So, what's our honest verdict?
Tsim Chai Kee was a bit of a "so-so" experience for us—good, but perhaps a bit overhyped.
That being said, the shrimp wontons themselves were incredibly plump, fresh, and delicious!
