Kau Kee 九記牛腩

Before any trip to Hong Kong, you’ll undoubtedly stumble upon recommendations for incredible local eats, and one name that consistently pops up is Kau Kee.
Famous for its Michelin Bib Gourmand status, this legendary noodle shop was high on my list of must-try spots.
To cut straight to the chase: Noodle #14, the Curry Beef Tendon Noodle, was an absolute winner, offering pure satisfaction. However, Noodle #10 left me a bit underwhelmed due to its noodle texture.
For those of you considering a visit to Kau Kee, I’m sharing my experience, focusing on what travelers often wonder most about.
1. How Long is the Wait?

* Opening Hours: 12:30 PM - 10:30 PM / Closed Sundays
Kau Kee opens its doors at 12:30 PM.
Worried about a long wait, I arrived around 11:50 AM and found a few groups already waiting ahead of me.
Thankfully, I was able to enter right at opening. The line quickly grew longer right after they opened, so arriving early definitely pays off.

📌 Waiting Tips
✔️ Arrive 30-40 minutes before opening for a good chance to be in the first seating.
✔️ Meals don't take long, so the turnover rate is quite fast.
Once we ordered, our food arrived almost immediately—I don't think we waited more than 5 minutes!
2. Payment is Cash Only

This is a crucial detail to remember before you go:
Kau Kee only accepts cash (Hong Kong Dollars).
Since credit cards are not accepted,
I highly recommend preparing enough Hong Kong Dollars in advance. Even if you use WeChat Pay, it must be linked to a Hong Kong Dollar account.

The payment process at Kau Kee is straightforward: order, enjoy your meal, then take the bill (like the one pictured above) to the counter and pay in cash.
3. Recommended Noodles & Menu Items

The Kau Kee menu can look a bit overwhelming with so many options, but it’s actually built around three simple combinations:
① Broth ② Beef Cut ③ Noodle Type
Once you decide on these three, ordering becomes a breeze!
① Broth | ② Beef Cut | ③ Noodle |
Beef Broth (1-11) Curry Broth (12-16) Oyster Sauce Dry (24-27,32-35) Curry Dry (28-31) | brisket (brisket) tendon (tendon) slice (slice) | rice e-fu flat vermicelli |
Let’s break down the Kau Kee noodle types for you:
1) rice noodle : Soft and slippery rice noodles, generally a crowd-pleaser.
2) e-fu noodle : A soft and springy egg noodle, often lightly fried.
3) flat noodle : A firm, chewy alkaline noodle that breaks easily, with a distinct texture.
4) vermicelli : Thin rice vermicelli, great for slurping.
👉🏻 Want the most authentically Hong Kong noodle experience?
Go for e-fu egg noodles & flat noodles.

The most commonly ordered dishes by visitors are usually:
✔️ #4 Beef Brisket in E-Fu Noodle in Broth
✔️ #14 Beef Tendon in E-Fu Noodle in Curry
These two are perennial favorites.
I initially considered #4, but wanting to try something a bit different, I ordered #10 and #14.
If it's your first time, the popular #4 + #14 combination is definitely a safe and delicious bet.
4. My Honest Review of the Dishes

📌 My Order
The total came to HK$145 (approximately ~$19 USD).
As mentioned, the food arrived almost instantly after ordering.

▲ #14 Beef Tendon in E-Fu Noodle in Curry
First up, Noodle #14 was absolutely delicious. The beef tendon was wonderfully chewy and tender, and the generous cuts of beef added to the satisfaction. But what truly made it was the rich and deeply flavorful curry broth.
It had that unique, profound curry taste that just made me want to keep spooning it up. Yum!

The noodles used were E-Fu Noodles, which are a type of egg noodle that’s been lightly fried.
I initially expected them to be super chewy, but they had a surprisingly soft texture.
The noodles soaked up the curry broth beautifully, and the combination was incredibly satisfying. I thoroughly enjoyed it.

▲ #10 Beef Slices in Flat Noodle in Broth
On the other hand, Noodle #10 was a bit of a mixed bag. The broth was incredibly rich and the beef slices were tender and delicious, but...
The texture of the flat alkaline noodles (Flat Noodle) just didn't quite hit the mark for my personal taste.

They felt slightly undercooked, which might be a deal-breaker for some. It’s definitely a love-it-or-hate-it kind of texture.
While the broth and beef were fantastic, the noodles left me wishing for something else.
That said, flat noodles are commonly used in traditional Hong Kong wonton noodles. If you're looking for an authentic local flavor, definitely give them a try! It was a unique experience that certainly stuck with me.
5. Who Should Visit Kau Kee in Hong Kong?

If you’re keen to experience an authentic local noodle shop in Hong Kong, Kau Kee is definitely worth a visit.
Make sure to order one curry dish and one beef broth dish.
Since the noodle textures vary quite a bit, it’s also fun to order different types and compare them!

Just remember these two key tips: arrive 30-40 minutes before opening and bring cash. Keep these in mind, and you'll have a much smoother and more delicious meal at Kau Kee. 🧡

The most frequently ordered dishes by Koreans are #4 beef brisket in e-fu noodle in broth and #14 beef tendon in e-fu noodle in curry. E-fu egg noodles and kansui noodles are considered the most authentic Hong Kong-style noodles.
The author was very satisfied with #14 Curry Beef Tendon Noodles, praising the tender tendon and meat, and the rich curry broth. On the other hand, for #10 Sliced Beef Noodles, while the broth and meat were good, the author found the texture of the flat kansui noodles not to their liking, which was a pity.
