Did you know that Hungarian wines are often a hidden gem? They don't have a huge export market, which means when you visit Hungary, you get the amazing opportunity to taste high-quality wines at incredibly affordable prices right at the source!
While Tokaj wine often tops everyone's must-buy list for a Hungarian trip, I'm here to tell you that Eger wines are just as famous and utterly delightful!
Today, I'm excited to share my recent experience visiting Eger's renowned 'Valley of the Beautiful Woman' – a wine lover's paradise.
Valley of the Beautiful Woman (Szépasszonyvölgy)
This iconic wine cellar district is a highlight of Eger, Hungary. It's truly unique, featuring numerous wine cellars carved directly into the soft tuff rock – a result of accumulated volcanic ash. These cave-like cellars are nestled together, creating an enchanting atmosphere.
There are several captivating legends about how the 'Valley of the Beautiful Woman' got its name. Some say it was a place where offerings were made to a goddess of beauty, while others simply suggest that the wine cellars themselves were exceptionally beautiful. Whatever the origin, the name certainly adds to its mystique!
The valley forms a charming, somewhat circular village, with a delightful array of shops lining the path.
Each establishment offers a diverse selection of wines, available in both traditional bottles and convenient PET bottles.

After browsing through many options, the winery I carefully selected to visit was Tóth Ferenc Winery, located at number 46.

This winery boasts a tradition of over 40 years, and it's currently run by the founder's daughter and son-in-law, continuing the family legacy.

I chose this particular winery because it looked noticeably cleaner and more inviting than some of the others.

For my tasting, I went with the second white wine on the menu, a recommendation from the friendly staff.
At current exchange rates (as of August 2026), a glass of this delightful wine costs less than ~$2, and they pour a generous 3.4 fluid ounces (100ml)! A full bottle will set you back less than ~$10, which is an absolute steal for this quality.

This white wine was incredibly zesty and refreshing! While those who dislike tart flavors might not be fans, I personally loved it. My immediate thought was that it would be the perfect aperitif, cleansing the palate and truly whetting the appetite before a meal.
After tasting, I absolutely had to buy a bottle! Isn't the packaging just beautiful?
I'm already imagining serving this as a delightful pre-dinner drink when friends come over to visit! > <
Summary & Overall Impression
Cleanliness & Atmosphere: ★★★★☆
Taste: ★★★★☆
Would I revisit?: Absolutely, I'm already planning my next trip to try their rosé!
Since I visited on a day trip, I couldn't indulge in as much wine as I would have liked, which was a bit of a shame. If you're planning a visit, I highly recommend coming by public transportation or booking an overnight stay. That way, you'll have the freedom to explore more wineries in the area without worrying about driving!
Next time, I might even consider buying wine in a PET bottle for easier transport, instead of a traditional glass bottle!
I hope this post helps you plan your own amazing wine adventure in Eger. Happy travels, everyone! ❤️
