Ultimate Tokyo Skyliner & 72-Hour Metro Pass Guide 2026
Skip the transit stress! Here is your complete 2026 guide to the Tokyo Skyliner and 72-Hour Metro Pass, from booking discounts to easy airport exchanges.
Skyliner Timetable & 72-Hour Tokyo Metro Pass
The most important question on your first day in Tokyo:
📌 How do I get from the airport to downtown?
While there are several options from Narita Airport to central Tokyo,
including limousine buses and local trains,
my top recommendation for a seamless trip is the Keisei Skyliner!
It zips you straight to Nippori or Ueno Station in just 40 minutes,
making it one of the most popular and efficient airport transit options.
Because all seats are reserved,
it's highly recommended to check the departure times
and book your tickets in advance to secure your preferred time slot.
Here is your complete guide to Skyliner timetables, booking discounts,
and the easiest way to exchange your tickets!

Skyliner Timetable
The Skyliner conveniently departs every 20 minutes.
The first train from Narita Airport heading to Nippori and Ueno
leaves at 7:30 AM!
Keep in mind that weekday and weekend schedules vary slightly, so double-check before you go.
If you're heading back to the airport, the first train from Ueno departs at 5:40 AM.
I boarded at Ueno, and since it's the terminal station,
the train was already waiting when I arrived a bit early,
allowing for an immediate, stress-free boarding.
Always double-check the Skyliner departure times
when planning your return trip to the airport!
How to Buy Skyliner Tickets
I highly recommend purchasing your Skyliner tickets in advance.
The most reliable platforms for international travelers are
Trip.com and Klook.
After comparing prices, the difference between Trip.com and Klook
was minimal, so I booked via Trip.com to use some points I had saved up.
I opted for the Skyliner Round Trip + 72-Hour Metro Pass combo,
which cost around ~$41.
👉 Keep an eye out for seasonal sales or promo codes!
You can often save a few extra dollars,
so check both platforms for the best current deal.
Ticket Type | Trip.com | Klook |
Round Trip + 24 Hours | ~$34 | ~$34 |
Round Trip + 48 Hours | ~$38 | ~$38 |
Round Trip + 72 Hours | ~$41 | ~$41 |
One Way + 48 Hours | ~$23 | ~$23 |
Booking |
Why is pre-booking an absolute must?
If you buy a ticket at the station counter, it costs 2,580 JPY (approx. ~$18).
🚨 Pre-booking online drops the price to about ~$15.
With savings like that, there's no reason to wait until you arrive!
Saving $3-4 per person might not sound huge,
but if you're traveling as a couple or a family, it adds up quickly.
Pre-booking isn't just an option; it's a travel hack requirement!
All you need is your digital voucher to exchange at the counter.

Skyliner Round Trip | - | ~$32 |

Ticket Exchange at Narita Airport Terminal 2
Exchanging your digital voucher for a physical Skyliner ticket at Narita is a breeze!
1️⃣ Follow the prominent "Train" signs in the arrivals hall.
Following these signs will lead you to
2️⃣ An escalator taking you down one floor to the station level.
Once downstairs, you'll immediately spot a massive Skyliner counter, but wait...
✖️ Do NOT go to this main counter!
👉 Look to your left and head to the Keisei Ticket Information Center, located right next to the FamilyMart.
⚠️ Important Tip ⚠️
If you booked tickets for multiple people under one reservation (like my booking for two),
do not split up into different lines.
Your entire group must go to the counter together.
The staff will issue all tickets in the reservation at once to the lead booker!
Since I purchased a round-trip package,
they handed me the outbound ticket (Narita to Nippori/Ueno) right away,
and...
The voucher for the return trip was placed safely in an envelope.
Keep this envelope secure! You'll need to exchange it for an actual ticket
at Nippori or Ueno Station on your departure day.
Tokyo Subway 72-Hour Metro Pass
Exchanging your Metro Pass voucher is incredibly fast—literally takes 10 seconds.
Find a ticket machine with a QR code reader,
scan your digital QR code, and out pops your pass!
I used the Metro Pass on a previous Tokyo trip and loved the convenience,
so getting it again was a no-brainer.
The best part? It operates on a strict 72-hour clock from the moment you first tap in,
not calendar days. This means a 72-hour pass can often stretch across 4 days of travel!
If it's your first time in Tokyo, locating the specific Metro Pass machines
might take a minute.
👉 Just head directly to the subway entrance gates; the correct machines are located right next to them.
Exchanging Your Return Skyliner Ticket at Ueno Station
For my return to the airport, I exchanged my voucher at Ueno Station.
✔️ I simply handed over the envelope they gave me at Narita, and they issued my ticket immediately—no passport check required!
If you plan to use the Skyliner for both arrival and departure,
buying a round-trip ticket upfront saves you significant time and hassle on your way home.
Just showing the envelope without fumbling for IDs makes the return journey delightfully smooth.
Note: If you are departing from Nippori Station, you must exchange your Skyliner ticket before passing through the subway exit gates!

If you don't plan on using JR lines extensively
and want the freedom to explore Tokyo's diverse neighborhoods without worrying about transit costs,
I highly recommend the ✅ Tokyo Metro Pass!
Combining the lightning-fast Skyliner airport transfer
with the budget-friendly Tokyo Metro Pass
in a single combo package is the smartest way to kick off your Tokyo adventure!
