With summer vacation fast approaching, you might be wondering where to head next.
If you're still undecided, let me help you out.
If Southeast Asia feels too hot and a European getaway requires too much time and budget,
let me introduce you to a fantastic alternative.
Boasting comfortable temperatures in the high 60s to low 70s (°F) and romantic night views,
Hakodate is the ultimate summer escape.
Located just a train ride or quick flight from Sapporo,
it's the perfect destination for a 3-day weekend trip.

1. Beyond Sapporo: Why Hakodate?

When planning a trip around Hokkaido or near Sapporo,
many travelers immediately think of Otaru, Biei, or Furano.
But if you're looking for true retro charm and one of the world's most spectacular night views,
the southern port city of Hakodate is the answer.
While it's a popular winter wonderland, it's incredibly pleasant in spring and summer.
With recent changes to flight routes in mid-2026,
now is the perfect time to lock in your travel plans.
Here is my ultimate 3-day itinerary and essential packing guide.
2. Welcome to Hakodate
Before we dive into the itinerary,
here's a quick overview of what makes Hakodate special.
Location

Situated at the southernmost tip of Hokkaido,
Hakodate is a picturesque port city surrounded by the sea,
acting as a bridge connecting Hokkaido and Honshu.
Because it was one of Japan's first cities to open to international trade,
it retains a highly exotic, Western-influenced culture.
It's a relatively compact city, making it ideal for a short, relaxing weekend trip.
How to Get There

There are three main ways to travel to Hakodate:
Transport | Departure Point |
Airplane | 1. International Flights (e.g., from Seoul/Taipei) 2. Japan Domestic (Direct from Tokyo, Sapporo, etc.) |
Train | JR Hokuto Limited Express from Sapporo Station (~3.5 hours) |
Ferry | Available when traveling from Aomori |
Unless you are doing a cross-country Japan tour
or utilizing a JR Rail Pass for extensive regional travel,
flying is by far the most convenient and time-efficient option.
Why You Should Book Now (Summer 2026 Updates)

As of early June 2026, some budget airlines suspended their direct international routes to Hakodate.
This means you'll likely need to book a quick transit flight through Tokyo or Sapporo.
Additionally, Japan's entry tax is scheduled to increase starting in July 2026.
To avoid the rising costs of transit flights and the new entry fees,
I highly recommend securing your flights as soon as possible for your upcoming getaway.

3. Travel Essentials
Because it's a smaller city, it's incredibly easy to navigate independently.
However, to make your trip absolutely seamless,
here are 3 essential things you need to prepare.
Rental Car

If you want to comfortably explore attractions on the outskirts of the city,
renting a car is a must.
During peak summer season, vehicle inventory runs out quickly
and prices surge, so be sure to book well in advance.

eSIM

To look up local travel info on the go,
use Google Maps, update your socials, and stay connected,
reliable data is a lifeline.
Skip the hassle of swapping physical SIM cards
and download an eSIM before you fly out.
Cash (Japanese Yen)

While many places in Japan now accept credit cards or Apple Pay,
there are still several traditional spots and local vendors that are cash-only.
Of course, there are plenty of convenience stores with ATMs where you can withdraw cash easily,
but you might need cash the moment you arrive (for transport or small snacks).
Always keep a small amount of Yen in your wallet just in case.
4. The Perfect 3-Day Hakodate Itinerary

To save you from itinerary fatigue and backtracking,
here is a highly efficient 3-day route.
Day | Itinerary Stops |
Day 1 | Arrive in Hakodate - Pick up rental car - Check into accommodation - Ajisai Main Store (Shio Ramen) - Goryokaku Tower - Yunokawa Onsen Village - Local Izakaya |
Day 2 | Motomachi Park - Hachimanzaka Slope - Hakodateyama Ropeway - Kanemori Red Brick Warehouse - Lucky Pierrot - Don Quijote Shopping |
Day 3 | Hakodate Morning Market - Goryo Junmai Ginjo Brewery - Return rental car - Departure |
This schedule hits all the major tourist spots and shopping areas
without feeling overly rushed.
For restaurants along the route, a great rule of thumb is to
check Google Maps and pick places with 4.0+ stars—you rarely go wrong!

Ajisai and Lucky Pierrot are absolute Hakodate institutions,
which is why I made sure to include them in the itinerary. You have to try them!
Also, for the Hakodateyama Ropeway and Goryokaku Tower,
buying your tickets online in advance is always slightly cheaper than buying at the gate,
even if it just saves you a few dollars. Check the link below.

Where to Stay
To pull off this itinerary comfortably,
choosing the right home base is key.
Here are my top 2 hotel recommendations:

1. La'gent Stay Hakodate Ekimae
Located right next to the station, it offers beautiful harbor views.
It's also surrounded by great restaurants, making it
perfect for enjoying the evening.
2. Global View Hakodate
About a 10-minute walk from the station,
but it's close to tram stops and convenience stores.
The highlight here is the fantastic public bath (onsen).
They offer apartment-style rooms,
which is a massive plus if you want extra space to spread out.
What to Eat

I mentioned these earlier, but you cannot leave without trying
Lucky Pierrot, a legendary local burger chain
(they literally only have locations in Hakodate!).

Then there's Ajisai, famous for its Shio (salt) Ramen.
I expected a light broth, but was pleasantly surprised
by how rich, deep, and satisfying it was.

And for the grand finale: Genghis Khan (Hokkaido-style BBQ) 🔥
The restaurant name is in Japanese,
so I've linked the Google Maps location below.
It's a bit on the pricey side—
we happily spent over ~$77 here—but it was worth every penny.
The lamb is incredibly tender with zero gamey smell.

It doesn't have a ton of reviews yet, but it's a true hidden gem.
(Fun fact: The owner's friend is a hunter,
so you can even try wild game like venison and bear meat here!)
