When traveling to Japan, hotels are always an easy option, but I often find myself frustrated by how tiny the rooms are for the price.
Fitting large suitcases into a cramped space can quickly take away from the relaxing vacation vibe.
While location is key, my priority is finding a place where I can actually unpack and move around comfortably without tripping over my luggage.
That is why apartment-style stays are becoming my go-to choice for city trips.
For my recent trip to Osaka, I booked a spacious rental that ticked all these boxes.
Here is my honest review covering the location, self-check-in process, room layout, amenities, and pros and cons.
Toho Residence Osaka: Prime Nipponbashi Location
東方レジデンス · 3 Chome-3-33 Kozu, Chuo Ward, Osaka, 542-0072, Japan
For this trip, I chose a rental right near Nipponbashi Station.
Being so close to the station made exploring incredibly easy, putting most of Osaka's major sights within walking distance.
(Kuromon Market and Den Den Town are both just a short stroll away)
While staying in the city center is great, I also planned day trips to nearby Nara.
Having direct train access without annoying transfers made this location a massive win.
I booked the 1-Bedroom Suite for a 3-night stay, which came out to a total of ~$160.
That averages out to about ~$51 per night, which is incredibly budget-friendly for the amount of space you get.

How the Self-Check-In Works
Most apartment-style accommodations in Japan use a self-check-in system.
Toho Residence sends out detailed check-in instructions about three days before your arrival, so make sure to keep an eye on your inbox.
Once you submit your passport photo via the secure link they provide, they will send over the building entry details.
Submitting your passport info is a standard legal requirement for foreign travelers staying in Japan, so you can do this without any safety concerns.
On check-in day, you will receive a code to unlock the first-floor mailbox.
Your room key is waiting inside, which you will use to open the main lobby entrance security door.
If you have ever stayed in an Airbnb, you will find this process incredibly simple and familiar.
Once inside the lobby, there is a single elevator on the right to take you up to your floor.
Room Layout and Amenities
We stayed in Room 603.
The entrance hallway leads past a shoe rack to a separated bathroom layout, with the toilet and shower room in completely separate spaces.
The vanity came stocked with essential toiletries.
Toothbrushes, toothpaste, a razor, cups, and a hairdryer were all provided, meaning you do not have to pack many toiletries.
The shower room had everything we needed.
Shampoo, conditioner, and body wash were fully stocked, and there was even a bathtub—perfect for a relaxing soak after a long day of walking.
Just past the bathroom is the kitchen area.
It features a sink, induction cooktop, refrigerator, microwave, and electric kettle, making it incredibly convenient to prep light meals or heat up convenience store snacks.
The cabinets below were stocked with plates, cups, pots, pans, and essential utensils.
Opposite the kitchen countertop sits a small dining table, which was perfect for enjoying breakfast or late-night snacks.
The open space between the kitchen and the table is surprisingly wide, meaning we could leave our large suitcases fully open without blocking the path. :)
The Bedroom Area
The bedroom area features two double beds side-by-side.
Since all of our bulky luggage stayed in the kitchen/dining area, the bedroom itself felt spacious and uncluttered.
The thick blackout curtains made sleeping in a breeze, and having handy charging ports right by the headboard was super convenient.
They initially provide one bath towel and one hand towel per guest. Since we were staying for 3 nights, we requested extra towels, and the host kindly provided two more of each.
There were five clothes hangers inside the bedroom closet space, which was plenty for our needs.
Good ventilation is a must for me, so having a private balcony was a massive plus.
It was perfect for airing out clothes after eating at smoky local eateries, or for hanging up laundry.
When you are staying for three or more nights, these small, practical details make a huge difference in comfort.
The apartment also has clear signs with the Wi-Fi password and trash disposal instructions.
They also offer different room configurations that would easily suit families or larger groups.
A Few Minor Drawbacks
The only real downside was that the washing machine is located on the first floor rather than inside the apartment itself.
Having to head down to retrieve your laundry is slightly more tedious than having an in-room washer, but it gets the job done.
Shared Conveniences & Final Thoughts
While many vacation rentals skip this detail, the first-floor lobby had complimentary umbrellas that guests could borrow on rainy days.
Some online reviews mentioned street noise due to the nearby main road, but as light sleepers, we honestly did not notice it at all.
The building was fully booked during our stay, but the soundproofing was excellent—we barely heard our neighbors.
If you are looking for a place with more room to breathe than a standard Japanese hotel, I highly recommend looking into apartment-style rentals like this.
This specific spot is incredibly well-positioned: a 3-minute walk to Kuromon Market, a 5-minute walk to the nearest subway station, and a 3-minute walk to the nearest convenience store.
With a full kitchen, dining table, and private balcony, it is the perfect home base for a comfortable, stress-free stay in Osaka. :)

You can book it for ~$160 for a 3-night, 4-day stay. It is relatively affordable at roughly ~$51 per night.
It is a self check-in system where you submit a photo of your passport through a link received 3 days prior to check-in to get access instructions. On the day of arrival, you check the password for the mailbox on the first floor, retrieve your room key, and then enter through the main entrance.
Cooking is possible as the room's kitchen is fully equipped with an induction stove, a microwave, and utensils. However, the washing machine is not located inside the room but separately on the first floor, so you will need to go downstairs to use it.
Kuromon Market and a convenience store are a 3-minute walk from the accommodation. The subway station is also just a 5-minute walk away, making public transportation very convenient.
