Just a short walk from the heart of downtown Ljubljana,
lies a massive, sprawling forest—
and that is Tivoli Park.
First created back in 1813,
this beautiful space has been deeply loved by locals
as their favorite stroll ever since.
Often called the green heart of Ljubljana,
let me introduce you to Tivoli Park!

Tivoli Park was originally
designed by French engineer Jean Blanchard,
based on three scenic walkways.
Later on, Slovenia's master architect
Jože Plečnik put his touch on it,
transforming it into the beautiful park we see today.

Boasting a vast area of about 459 hectares,
it seamlessly connects the city center
with Rožnik Hill,
making it Ljubljana’s largest green space.
It’s the perfect place to experience that classic European vibe—
lounging on the grass for a relaxing picnic
and watching kids run around happily.
It truly is a picturesque escape!
2. Exploring the Park
1️⃣
Jakopič Promenade
Jakopič Promenade

Stretching all the way from the park entrance
to Tivoli Castle, this scenic path
was masterfully designed by Jože Plečnik.
Year-round, both sides of the path
host large-scale photography exhibitions,
earning it the nickname "the open-air gallery."

When we visited,
there was an exhibition featuring rescue workers.
While the photos felt like true works of art,
they also left us with a deep sense of gratitude
for their incredible hard work and dedication.
2️⃣
Tivoli Castle
Tivoli Castle

Located right at the end of the promenade,
you'll find this beautiful neoclassical mansion.

Today, it serves as the
International Centre of Graphic Arts (MGLC).
Even if you don't go inside,
the view of the park looking down
from the castle's front steps is absolutely breathtaking.

Don't forget to look for
the four dog statues guarding the front of the castle!
3️⃣
Cekin Mansion
Cekin Mansion

Located in the northern part of the park, this elegant building is
Today, it serves as the National Museum
of Contemporary History of Slovenia.

Thanks to its gorgeous Baroque exterior,
it's a fantastic spot for photos,
and it's a fascinating place where you can explore
Slovenia's modern history at a glance.
Since the country has survived many conflicts,
you'll find a wide range of historical
war-related documents and artifacts on display.
4️⃣
Ljubljana Zoo
Ljubljana Zoo

Located in the southwestern part of the park,
this zoo seamlessly blends into
the natural forest of Rožnik Hill.

Thanks to enclosures that work with the natural landscape,
the animals live in an environment
very close to their actual wild habitats.

From rare Alpine wildlife
to exotic species from around the world,
it's a highly recommended spot for families
traveling with kids or
any nature lover!
They even offer hands-on feeding experiences,
which the kids absolutely love.
3. Travel Tips

✅ Hiking up Rožnik Hill
If you follow the trail winding up
behind the park and the zoo,
a scenic 20 to 30-minute walk
will bring you to the top of Rožnik Hill.
Grab a refreshing drink from the café
and admire the beautiful pink church at the summit.

✅ Pack a Picnic
While there are cafés inside the park,
I highly recommend packing some snacks and a picnic blanket
to lounge on the lush green lawns.
It's the ultimate way to experience
the relaxed, slow-paced lifestyle of the locals.

✅ Rent a Bike
Grab one of Ljubljana's public bikes,
BicikeLJ, and pedal your way
around the park.
Cruising around with a cool breeze in your hair
is pure, unadulterated healing.
