and I wholeheartedly recommend a visit if you're exploring Mexico City.
While content about Mexico City might not always garner the most views,
I find immense satisfaction in knowing that it can be helpful to those few seeking specific information. So, let's dive into the story of Templo Mayor!
The History of Templo Mayor
To give you a brief overview of Templo Mayor:
This was once a sacred temple of the Aztec civilization.
Its discovery was quite serendipitous, uncovered during electrical work in Mexico City.
When the Spanish invaded and conquered centuries ago,
they plundered and destroyed this holy Aztec site,
then built a cathedral directly on top of its ruins.
This is why you can see Templo Mayor right next to the Metropolitan Cathedral today.

You can clearly see the Metropolitan Cathedral right next to it on the map, can't you?
It was literally built right over where Templo Mayor stood.
It's a stark reminder of the actions taken by colonizers.
On our way to the site, we encountered some fascinating (and perhaps a little intimidating?)
performers in traditional attire, engaged in what seemed like a ritualistic dance or performance art.
Apparently, this isn't a one-off event; many visitors report seeing them.
They seem to be there daily!

The entrance is conveniently located underground, easily found by following Google Maps as you explore the city center.
You can purchase your admission ticket directly at the entrance.
The fee is 95 pesos, which is roughly ~$4 USD.
It's always a bit amusing how many places in Mexico give you a simple paper receipt as a ticket!
You can't help but wonder how truly magnificent this temple would have been
if it hadn't been destroyed by the Spanish.
While you can glimpse parts of it from the street above without a ticket,
I highly recommend paying the admission fee. There are so many intricate carvings
and details that are best appreciated up close.
You'll also see sculptures depicting various gods worshipped by the ancient Aztecs
(some of them quite charming, actually!).
One section functions as a museum, showcasing excavated artifacts.
The distinct style of these ancient Mexican relics is truly captivating.
Isn't that frog carving just adorable?
There's also a fascinating recreation of what the original temple site would have looked like.
Beyond the museum's paid entrance, if you walk around the nearby streets, you'll notice sections of glass flooring.
While you can't get up close, these offer intriguing glimpses into the ruins beneath the modern city.
It's amazing to think that a vast network of Aztec ruins lies hidden beneath Mexico City.
Compared to the overwhelming scale of Teotihuacan, which we visited outside Mexico City,
Templo Mayor offers a different kind of wonder. It's truly fascinating and intriguing to discover such an ancient temple
hidden right beneath the bustling modern city center.
Given its central location and affordable entrance fee, it's definitely worth a stop on your Mexico City itinerary :)
