alongside the Forbidden City and the Great Wall,
there's one absolute must-visit you can't miss.
It's none other than
the Temple of Heaven Park (天坛公园)!
The Temple of Heaven Park is a quintessential Chinese imperial relic where emperors offered sacrifices to Heaven. Designated a UNESCO World Heritage site, it stands as an iconic landmark of Beijing.
Centrally located in the heart of the city, it offers excellent accessibility, and you can enjoy both its rich history and beautiful natural surroundings, making it a popular choice even for a half-day visit.
Today, I'll cover everything from the Temple of Heaven Park's features,
its location and history, to essential travel tips,
all in one go.
1. What is the Temple of Heaven Park?
The Temple of Heaven Park is located in the southeastern part of Beijing, and is China's largest imperial sacrificial complex dedicated to Heaven (祭天).
Constructed during the Yongle Emperor's reign in the Ming Dynasty, it was established in 1420, and served as a place where emperors offered sacrifices to Heaven and prayed for bountiful harvests.
The name 'Temple of Heaven' itself carries the meaning of an altar where sacrifices are offered to Heaven.
The most famous structure is the Hall of Prayer for Good Harvests (祈年殿), impressive with its azure tiled roof, and it's considered one of Beijing's most representative landmarks.
More recently, the Temple of Heaven Park garnered even more attention when it was the location visited by then-US President Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping during the US-China Summit.
Thanks to this, it has recently become a destination attracting not only local Chinese visitors but also many international tourists, solidifying its place as one of Beijing's premier attractions.

The Temple of Heaven Park is
close to the heart of Beijing,
making it easily accessible by subway alone.
The most frequently used station is
Tiantandongmen Station (Temple of Heaven East Gate Station) on Subway Line 5,
and if you take Exit A2,
you'll reach the East Gate in about a 5-minute walk.
The East Gate and South Gate are the most commonly used entrances,
and entering through the East Gate makes it convenient to get to the Hall of Prayer for Good Harvests.
3. Must-See Highlights and Historical Tales
Hall of Prayer for Good Harvests (Qinian Dian)
It is the symbol of the Temple of Heaven Park and its most famous architectural marvel.
It's a circular wooden structure built without a single nail,
featuring a beautiful harmony of blue tiles and golden decorations.
Imperial Vault of Heaven (Huangqiongyu) and Echo Wall (Huiyinbi)
This building once housed the divine tablets used by the emperor during sacrificial ceremonies.
The circular wall surrounding the building is also famous as the
Echo Wall. It boasts a unique acoustic design where even a whisper along the wall
can be heard clearly on the opposite side.
Unfortunately, when I visited, the Imperial Vault of Heaven was undergoing renovation,
so I couldn't fully appreciate its magnificent exterior.
Circular Mound Altar (Huanqiu Tan)
This is the circular altar where emperors offered sacrifices to Heaven.
Both its steps and platforms are designed in multiples of nine,
as nine was considered a symbol of the emperor in China.
Temple of Heaven Cultural Relics Exhibition
Inside the Temple of Heaven Park, you'll also find the Temple of Heaven Cultural Relics Exhibition,
where you can explore the history of the Temple of Heaven, its sacrificial culture, and artifacts.
This exhibition showcases sacrificial vessels, imperial robes, and other artifacts
used by emperors when offering sacrifices to Heaven, allowing you to
gain a deeper understanding of the Temple of Heaven Park's historical significance.
4. Travel Tips and Ticket Purchase Guide
The Temple of Heaven Park is much larger than you might expect!
If you take your time exploring the Hall of Prayer for Good Harvests and the Circular Mound Altar,
it's best to plan for about 2 to 3 hours.
Enter through the East Gate for a convenient route through:
Hall of Prayer for Good Harvests → Imperial Vault of Heaven → Circular Mound Altar
Following the recommended path and exiting through the South Gate
is the most efficient way to explore.
During summer, there aren't many shaded spots, so I highly recommend
preparing a parasol or hat, and plenty of bottled water beforehand.
Tickets for the Temple of Heaven Park
are categorized into general park admission tickets and combined tickets.
While a general park admission ticket lets you
wander through the beautiful grounds of the Temple of Heaven Park,
to truly immerse yourself in the grandeur of the main architectural wonders like
the Hall of Prayer for Good Harvests, the Imperial Vault of Heaven, the Echo Wall, and the Circular Mound Altar,
you'll definitely want to opt for the combined ticket.
Especially if it's your first visit, I highly recommend choosing the combined ticket
– it includes all the must-see highlights!
I personally found the process of booking directly in Chinese a bit cumbersome,
so I smartly purchased my tickets in advance from home.
This meant I didn't have to stress about finding ticketing options at the venue
or dealing with payments in Chinese,
allowing for a much smoother and more comfortable entry experience!

5. Trip Completed! My Honest Thoughts
The Temple of Heaven Park is so much more than just a collection of ancient relics;
it’s a captivating space where you can truly connect with both
China's imperial heritage and the vibrant everyday life of Beijing's residents.
The Hall of Prayer for Good Harvests was far more magnificent than I ever imagined from pictures,
and the stunning harmony of its vibrant blue roof and intricate golden embellishments truly left a lasting impression!
Wandering leisurely through the expansive park,
I also soaked in the wonderfully relaxed atmosphere of Beijing.
It offers a distinct charm compared to the Forbidden City or Tiananmen Square,
so I truly recommend dedicating about half a day in your Beijing itinerary
to explore this magnificent site!

The combined ticket is ~$7, and the park entrance ticket is ~$5. You can purchase these in advance from Korea and enter using a QR code.
