Fukuoka's Must-See & Do: TeamLab Forest

Ever since my first visit, whenever I plan a trip to Japan, the first thing I search for is whether there's a TeamLab exhibition in that region. That's how impactful my initial experience was, and it consistently exceeds my expectations with every visit. This time, after booking my flights for Fukuoka, it was the first thing I looked up!

To get there, simply take the subway to Tojinmachi Station and enjoy a leisurely stroll to the BOSS E・ZO building. While a bus might drop you closer, I had a subway pass and enjoy walking (just be sure to check a map, as it's a bit of a walk!).

If you've booked your tickets in advance online, you can head straight to the entrance – no need to fuss with kiosks.

At the entrance, there's a section where you walk across something similar to balance balls used in Pilates, so they recommend wearing flat shoes or sneakers. Heels are definitely a no-go, but most comfortable shoes should be fine. Just a heads-up!

The exhibition is said to have seven sections, but many are interconnected, making it feel like fewer. TeamLab always has an accompanying app; you don't necessarily need to install it beforehand. You can easily download it by scanning a QR code at the entrance, and they even ask if you need Wi-Fi.

True to its name, 'Forest,' you'll discover a truly fantastical digital woodland.

Using the app you just installed, you can enjoy interactive games that kids will absolutely adore – and let's be honest, adults get just as into it!

It's like a real-life Pokémon Go, where you can 'capture' digital animals using arrows and nets. After you catch one, information pops up, and it gets added to your collection. But remember, you have to release them afterward!

Each theme is unique... while adults might play a few rounds and move on, kids could spend hours here without getting bored! This makes it a fantastic Fukuoka attraction if you're traveling with children. And don't underestimate it – some of the 'catching' can be quite challenging! (Catching birds with arrows is manageable, but netting fish is surprisingly tricky).

Things to Do in Fukuoka

Following the app-based activities, there's another interactive play area. Personally, I found it slightly less impressive than the ones in Osaka or Tokyo, but it's still a fun spot to explore.

After passing through several interconnected sections, you'll arrive at what I like to call the 'chill-out' zone.

This is where people sit and relax for a while. Every TeamLab exhibition I've visited has included a space like this. Rather than just rushing through, I recommend taking a moment here. If you're traveling solo, it's a great spot for reflection; with companions, it's perfect for a quiet chat. My personal favorite was a lying-down area in Tokyo's exhibition.

To be honest, having experienced this section multiple times, it's starting to feel a bit familiar. However, what makes this one different is that the balls are suspended by air currents. This makes for some fun photo opportunities where everyone pretends to be using telekinesis to float them!

After this, you've reached the end. If you're anything like me and wish it lasted longer (it's not an all-day affair), you can always go through it again from the beginning. I visited in the afternoon, and it didn't take an excessive amount of time to explore everything. If you love interactive exhibitions, TeamLab Forest is definitely a Fukuoka must-see!
