To tick off one of the ultimate items on my travel bucket list,

I headed back to Fukuoka to experience Japan's magical spring season firsthand.

Today, I’m excited to share a complete guide to Maizuru Park, Fukuoka’s premier cherry blossom spot!

I'll cover everything from the light-up schedule and admission fees to my honest food reviews!

Maizuru Park Basic Info

Maizuru Park is

a beautiful park built around the ruins of Fukuoka Castle, which originally

took about 7 years to construct starting in 1601.

Since parts of the ruined castle were left untouched rather than fully restored,

historic ruins like the old stone walls, moats, and

the Tamon Turret still remain today for visitors to explore.

During cherry blossom season,

around 1,000 cherry trees spanning 19 different species (including Somei Yoshino and weeping cherry trees)

burst into full bloom, making this one of Fukuoka's absolute best flower-viewing spots.

It's incredibly accessible, located just an 8-minute walk from

either Akasaka Station or Ohori Park Station,

and it's perfect for pairing with a stroll through the neighboring Ohori Park!

How to Get to Maizuru Park from Tenjin

Maizuru Park is quite close to Tenjin, the city's main downtown area.

The weather was so gorgeous that I decided to walk,

but you can check out the table below for all the different transit options!

2026 Fukuoka Cherry Blossom Festival: Maizuru Park Light-up Details

Every spring, Maizuru Park hosts a spectacular cherry blossom festival.

As the sun sets, around 500 lights illuminate the cherry blossoms and historic ruins,

completely transforming the atmosphere into a nighttime wonderland.

Three historic sites that are normally closed at night open to the public for this special event,

though they do require a separate admission ticket.

While you can buy tickets on-site, there might be a queue,

so I highly recommend booking online in advance!

Fukuoka Cherry Blossom Festival: Maizuru Park Street Food & Visit Review

I visited around 6:00 PM on Sunday, March 29th.

Even though it was getting late, the park was buzzing with people!

The cherry blossoms along the path leading to the park weren't quite in full bloom yet,

but they were already looking absolutely gorgeous.

Everyone was busy snapping photos in front of the blooming trees,

and the combination of the ambient lights and delicate pink blossoms was magical.

At the park entrance, you can grab a map, a festival poster, and an info brochure.

If you scan the QR code on the brochure, it connects directly to Google Maps, which is super convenient!

Taking photos from the entrance bridge yields some really beautiful shots.

Once you step into the main festival area, you'll see people spreading out picnic mats

on the lawn, gathering in groups to enjoy the cherry blossoms.

If you're planning a daytime visit, I highly recommend bringing a picnic mat along!

The festival has plenty of entertainment, including a stamp rally, live performances, and a mini zoo,

plus around 90 food trucks showcasing famous Fukuoka restaurants

as well as local delicacies from all over Kyushu.

For the stamp rally, you collect stamps from 10 designated spots around the venue

and submit them to the information desk to receive a free gift.

After taking a loop around the park, I stopped by the EAST zone food trucks

to grab some hot yakisoba.

In addition to yakisoba, you can find dim sum, gyoza, tempura, takoyaki, yakitori, Wagyu beef, parfaits, and more—

it's highly recommended for a delicious snack after a long walk.

Just keep in mind: it's cash only, so having cash on hand is an absolute must!

While you can purchase tickets at the entrance of the light-up area,

there can be long queues, so buying them online beforehand will save you a lot of time.

The festival grounds are quite massive, so wearing comfortable shoes is highly recommended.

Overall Thoughts

Maizuru Park is incredibly easy to access from both Hakata and Tenjin,

and it pairs perfectly with the neighboring Ohori Park

for a fantastic full-day itinerary.

When I visited on March 29th, the cherry blossoms weren't in full bloom yet, so

It felt a bit like a cherry blossom festival without the blossoms when I visited,

but if you're planning a trip to Fukuoka from early to mid-April,

you absolutely must add cherry blossom viewing at Maizuru Park to your itinerary!
